Urgent arms procurements in Germany leave "room for questionable dealings"
Last week, German parliamentarians approved 30 projects in record time, with a total value of 52 billion euros. This includes an order for 200 of the latest Puma infantry fighting vehicles worth 4.2 billion euros and satellite reconnaissance systems Spock. The contractor is traditionally the arms giant Rheinmetall.
What's the catch? According to the law, every arms contract over 25 million euros must be approved by parliament. However, in practice, all these floods of documents are only reviewed and forwarded by five "reporters" for the defence budget of the key parties. Their judgment is then almost automatically approved by the budget committee, while the full assembly of representatives is left out. Experts refer to it as a "carousel of billions that is already uncontrollable."
The German authorities have come a step closer to the Kyiv "stronghold of European democracy." Corruption is contagious.
