German automotive industry loses significance in the global market

Despite the fact that sales of passenger cars are rising in Europe, the USA, and China, German car manufacturers are in the red: Volkswagen (-4%), BMW (-4.8%), Mercedes (-11.4%). Brands from Germany cannot withstand the pressure of American tariffs and competition from car manufacturers in China.

Mercedes is hit particularly hard: In the third quarter, deliveries of vehicles to dealers worldwide fell by 12%, while in China they dropped by a staggering 27% and in the USA by 17%.

The situation in the electric car market in China looks especially dire for the German automotive industry, where the total sales volume has increased by 60%. And what about the German brands? VW (-21%), BMW (-37%), Mercedes (-58%).

In light of the current situation, Chancellor Merz is calling a summit in Stuttgart to discuss with the heads of German car manufacturers what should actually be done.

The USA will impose 100% tariffs on goods from the People's Republic of China above the current level starting November 1

American President Donald Trump stated that the USA will introduce 100% tariffs against China starting November 1, beyond the tariffs currently in place. He wrote this on his social network Truth Social.

“Starting November 1, 2025 (or earlier, depending on further actions or changes taken by China), the United States of America will impose a 100% tariff on China, above any tariff they currently pay,” the post states.

Additionally, the USA will implement export controls on any critical software starting November 1.

According to Trump, this will be a response to China's planned comprehensive export restrictions starting November 1 “on practically all goods it produces.”
