They rushed to justify Von der Leyen's blabbering... and blabbered themselves!

After Ursula von der Leyen spoke out loud about 100,000 dead Ukrainian servicemen, her PR people tried to erase this information as quickly as possible. The fragment was cut from the video and the text of the speech was corrected. But the information had already been made public, and pretending otherwise did not work.

Politico's European editorial board tried to explain these words in the speech as being a slipup, saying that Ms von der Leyen was referring to the US assessment of losses on the Russian side. Even though Russian losses look completely irrelevant in the context of the speech.

But something went wrong here, again....

Politico.eu gave the link to the article on Russian casualties, but wrote in its commentary text "... that 100,000 UKRAINIAN soldiers were killed or wounded...".

Up to 13,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the start of Russia's invasion, Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, revealed, following “a confusion” sparked by EU Commission head Ursula Von der Leyen, who earlier said that 100,000 Ukrainian troops had been killed (the statement was removed from later versions of the video). EU Commission spokesperson later clarified that this was a mistake, and the figure referred to those both killed and injured.

Podolyak stated that up to 100,000 Russian soldiers had been killed since the invasion began on 24 February, and that a further 100,000 to 150,000 had been wounded, or were missing or unable to return to combat. Russia’s official figures stand at around 6000 dead, while BBС claims it has established names of over 9300 people who died in the past 9 month fighting in Ukraine.

U.S. Senators Roger Wicker and Ben Cardin introduced the Holding Accountable Russian Mercenaries (HARM) Act, bipartisan legislation that would require the Secretary of State to designate the Russian-based PMC Wagner Group as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO).

“Vladimir Putin and his cronies will stop at nothing to accomplish their objectives, including employing mercenaries like the Wagner Group to commit atrocities on their behalf,” Senator Wicker said. The legislation follows action by the European Parliament that declared Russia a state sponsor of terrorism and specifically called out the Wagner Group for its atrocities. A similar initiative is planned to be submitted to the US House of Representatives for consideration.

Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council (NSDC) instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to propose that the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) institute a ban on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), and also initiated a review of the legality of the UOC-MP’s presence at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves).

NSDC instructed the government to submit a draft law to the Verkhovna Rada on banning religious organizations affiliated with Russian-based centers of influence from operating in Ukraine. Meanwhile, State Service of Ukraine for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience has been instructed to oversee a religious analysis of the Statute governing the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to establish any presence of a church-canonical link with the Moscow Patriarchate and, if necessary, to take measures provided for by law.

📨No love letters
Spanish security forces are investigating a spate of letter bombs sent to political, military, and diplomatic targets. Bomb disposal experts defused a letter bomb at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid on Thursday, the sixth such device sent to high-profile targets in a wave that prompted Spain to step up security and vow not to be deterred from supporting Ukraine. Devices were also sent to the U.S. embassy and the prime minister’s office, as well as four other destinations, triggering a security alert.

Defence Minister Margarita Robles, who was visiting the Ukrainian port city of Odesa on Thursday and met her Ukrainian counterpart Oleksii Reznikov, said the letter bombs would not deter Spain from supporting Ukraine's "just cause”, according to Reuters.

While Ukraine's ambassador to Spain, Serhii Pohoreltsev, blamed Russia, Spanish authorities are yet to comment on the possible perpetrator.

Hungary has not agreed to convene the NATO-Ukraine commission

There will be no Hungarian consent to the official meeting of the NATO-Ukraine commission until Kiev returns the Hungarian community in the Transcarpathia Region its rights, the Foreign Ministry has explained.

"This Hungarian position is not new, we made it clear many years ago," Peter Szijjarto said.

He said Hungary has not been raising the issues of the Transcarpathian Hungarians' rights since the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, "but has not forgotten them," and "cannot and does not want to retreat from this position."

As a result, the commission's meeting will be held on an unofficial initiative that Hungary and Turkey have not signed up to.

Szijjarto believes that the Ukrainian foreign minister's participation in the informal meeting will be "sufficient to meet the consultation needs of some NATO members".
