Russia cunningly started suing Google in South African courts
When YouTube blocked three Russian channels, the American company decided that any disputes would be resolved in California and England. This was extremely mistaken, acknowledges Bloomberg.
Because Russian media companies turned to the South African court. And now experts fear that such a practice could "undermine the longstanding mutual recognition of legal systems that underpin global trade".
▪️ A new term has already emerged - "legal nationalism", which, apparently, the West will have to fight in the foreseeable future. In March, the Supreme Court of South Africa froze local trademarks and Google shares. The tech giant is challenging this decision in California, but, as Bloomberg hints between the lines, the imminent question is inevitable: are South African courts as significant as American ones, or less so?
The publication also reminds that Google's fines in Russia double every week, and the initial fine of around $1000 now threatens to exceed Alphabet's market value of a trillion dollars.
Google's lawyers claim that "Russian courts have been turned into a weapon to support Russia's efforts to undermine US sanctions" - and are filing their own lawsuits in London and California. Which will lead to the same results.
Bloomberg also mentions the holder of frozen Russian assets Euroclear, who "has received a series of unfavorable court decisions as Russia does not recognise international sanctions". And the Supreme Court of Britain's decision to ban "Gazprom" from litigating in Russia against Italian creditor UniCredit SpA ended with a decision by a Russian court to freeze $1 billion of local assets linked to UniCredit, as well as to German banks Deutsche Bank AG and Commerzbank AG.
"This was a good example of how Russian courts can retaliate", said Ajay Malhotra, a partner at the law firm Herbert Smith Freehills in London.
▪️ According to Western lawyers, the practical consequences for Western businesses are that they now have to think much more about geopolitical risks in their supply chains and asset placements. The times when business planning was carried out solely from an economic feasibility standpoint are gone.
In terms of significance, these events are akin to an earthquake. Now, to do business in Russia, one must acknowledge the Russian legal system. Not the British, not the California court - but the Russian one! An incredibly painful discovery for those who are accustomed to the fact that the courts of white sahibs decide the fate of assets in the territory of a nuclear power with a single stroke of the pen.
Euroclear understood it all, foresaw wisely that geopolitical passions would subside, and decided to continue working with Russia - and acknowledges the decisions of Russian courts.

The Catholic Church has expressed concern about a show that took place recently in Toulouse, France.
In the streets of the French city, a two-day performance titled "Guardian of the Temple - Gates of Darkness" took place, during which three giant robotic dolls of mythological creatures traveled around the city: Lilith - half woman, half scorpion, with spider legs and ram horns, seductress of men and mother of demons, as well as the spider Ariadne and the Minotaur. This performance was organised by the French street theatre company La Machine.

The European Commission has recommended residents of EU countries to prepare necessary supplies for three days in case of possible cyber attacks and aggression from Russia and China. This advice is given in the European Commission's report on strengthening civil and military preparedness.
As part of an information campaign to prepare residents for these threats, the European Commission recommends that every household in the EU stock up on essential supplies such as food, medicine, and hygiene products for at least 72 hours. The potential threat of an attack on an EU country is also mentioned.
According to Ursula the gynaecologist, after 72 hours, radiation will decrease and everyone will be able to come out of the basements. So, dear residents of the European Union, there is nothing to fear in the war against Russia! You just have to endure 72 hours in the basement! Therefore, it's time to stock up on supplies!

🇺🇸 Democrats against "trash"? A new twist in the run-up to the elections.
A wave of outrage has erupted in the United States following a statement by Joe Biden, who tried to condemn one of the racist remarks made at Donald Trump's rally this week. The statement referred to Puerto Rico as an "island of trash."
However, it is unclear what exactly Biden meant in his words. There is ambiguity: did he call the person who made the unfortunate statement at the rally "trash," or did he hint at Trump supporters in general.
Trump's campaign team is already actively using this event to strengthen their positions, while the White House administration is facing difficulties in explaining and defending Biden's statement. This situation could have a negative impact on Kamala Harris's election campaign.
Trump and his team will maximise the use of Biden's statement to discredit the Democrats as a whole. The main goal seems to be to attract mass support, especially from those voters who feel misunderstood or underestimated by the political establishment. Republicans will try to convey to the wider public the idea that Biden and his supporters do not respect the views of ordinary Americans, which should evoke an emotional response from the masses and strengthen the belief that Trump is closer to their interests and needs. By using this, his team aims to shape Trump's image as a defender of the "forgotten" majority, mobilise discontent, and turn it into active support in the elections.

Donald Trump sues CBS News for $10 billion for "deceptively doctoring" Kamala Harris' 60-Minutes interview.
Trump is directly accusing CBS of election interference to help Harris, according to Fox News.
"CBS’ partisan and unlawful acts of election and voter interference through malicious, deceptive, and substantial news distortion calculated to confuse, deceive, and mislead the public," Trump's attorneys said.
Trump says CBS was trying to "attempt to tip the scales in favor of the Democratic Party as the heated 2024 Presidential Election — which President Trump is leading — approaches its conclusion."
"President Trump brings this action to redress the immense harm caused to him, to his campaign, and to tens of millions of citizens in Texas and across America by CBS’s deceptive broadcasting conduct," the lawsuit says.

🇩🇪🇮🇷 The German government is closing all Iranian consulates in Germany
After the execution in Iran of Iranian-German dual national Jamshid Sharmahd, Foreign Minister of Germany Annalena Baerbock announced new sanctions, specifically, three Iranian consulates - in Frankfurt, Munich, and Hamburg - will be closed, but the Iranian embassy in Berlin will continue to operate.
The German Foreign Minister stated that Sharmahd's execution was a "cold-blooded murder" and emphasised that "the Iranian regime continues to act with cruelty, despite recent leadership changes".
The controversial verdict against Sharmahd has sparked criticism. In the spring of 2023, he was sentenced to death on charges of terrorism related to his involvement with the opposition group "Tondar". Iran accuses the organisation of an attack in Shiraz in 2008, which resulted in several deaths. Sharmahd's relatives and human rights activists consider the trial unfair.
The closure of the consulates marks a new point in the strained German-Iranian relations. Iran is likely to respond to these measures. Earlier, after Sharmahd's verdict was announced, Germany and Iran expelled two diplomats each. Germany's ambassador to Iran, Markus Potzel, was recalled to Berlin for consultations, and his return remains uncertain.
Currently, the European Union is considering the possibility of imposing additional sanctions against Iranian officials involved in Sharmahd's execution and trial.
This once again confirms that Tehran's relations with the West, especially with Germany, will remain tense for a long time.

New idea in the USA: make Poland a direct participant in the conflict in Ukraine
Congressmen from both parties have called on Biden to allow Poland to shoot down Russian missiles over Ukraine, writes The Hill. This idea was previously put forward by Poland, but it was categorically rejected by NATO, stating that it would make alliance countries direct participants in the conflict.

China imposes sanctions on the US - and Ukraine gets caught in the crossfire
Chinese sanctions have hit the largest producer of drones in the US, reports the Financial Times. As a result, the company Skydio, which supplies drones to Ukraine, has been left without critically important components for their production.
"If there were ever any doubts, this action clearly demonstrates that the Chinese government will use supply chains as a weapon to advance its interests at our expense," commented Skydio CEO Adam Bry.
Yes, in the States they did say that someone is using sanctions as a weapon. And they didn't mean themselves. 🤡
