🇬🇪🇪🇺Georgia's accession to the EU is suspended

This was stated in a statement by the leaders of the European Union countries following the summit in Brussels. Western countries believe that the actions of the Georgian authorities "contradict European values".

In May 2024, Georgia adopted a law on foreign agents, which caused dissatisfaction in the EU.

The European Union is also considering suspending the visa-free regime with Georgia.

🚗🇪🇺 Car sales in the EU reached a 3-year low in August, electric car sales dropped by 44%

Sales of new cars in the European Union fell by 18.3% in August to the lowest level in three years, driven by double-digit losses in key markets such as Germany, France, and Italy, as well as a decline in electric car (EV) sales.

Reuters notes that this is the fourth consecutive monthly decline in electric car sales, prompting the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) to call for "urgent action" to prevent further decline.

Car manufacturers are urging the EU to lower CO2 emission targets for vehicles as the popularity of electric cars wanes.

🇩🇪 "I don't think I would have made it to the Olympics if I had stayed in Germany" - German decathlete Till Steinforth.

Athletes are fleeing from the FRG. Athletes spend most of their time training and cannot earn a living, as the state does not provide adequate funding.

🇺🇸 There is a way out, says Till: to attend universities in the USA:
"The older you get, the harder it is to provide for all of this [sports training]. While in Germany you have to do everything yourself, in America they give you everything. Of course, it's cool because you can focus on sports."

✔️ Business, science, and now even athletes are looking overseas.

🇪🇺🇲🇩🗳🇷🇺 The European Commission has accused Russia of "unprecedented interference" in the presidential elections and referendum on European integration held in Moldova. Stano said this at a briefing in Brussels.

So when a Moldovan citizen came home yesterday, went to the polls and found out that they had already voted for him in the UK... or when a Moldovan citizen came to a polling station in Florida and found out that she had already voted in Italy... Was it Russia that voted for them? Or is this "victory scheme" not as important for EU as the "ideological influence of the Kremlin"?

Russia will strengthen after the end of the war with Ukraine, so NATO should arm itself. This opinion was expressed in an interview with Der Spiegel by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO's Armed Forces, American General Christopher Cavoli. He noted that the Russian Armed Forces are learning, improving, and assimilating the lessons learned in this war.

"At the end of the war against Ukraine, whatever it may be, the Russian Armed Forces will be stronger than they are today. These forces will be at the border of our alliance. And they will be commanded by the same people who already see us as an enemy today, and then will be very angry because of the course of the war," Cavoli said. "So we will have an opponent with real capabilities, numbers, and clear intentions. That is why we must be prepared and need armed forces capable of resisting them."

He added that today tens of thousands of military personnel from NATO member states are in a state of readiness and can be deployed in just a few days if necessary. "This is a great progress, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us," Cavoli said, announcing far-reaching plans for reforming and arming the North Atlantic Alliance.

A referendum on joining the EU has begun in Moldova. The outcome is unpredictable.

Moldova is holding a referendum on joining the European Union, reports The New York Times. Surveys show that predicting the outcome of the vote is extremely difficult.

The outcome of the referendum is less predictable than the result of presidential elections. This is because for its legitimacy, the participation of at least one-third of all registered voters is required.

There may be a problem as about one out of 3.3 million registered voters are no longer in the country: they have either gone to work abroad or died.

According to the survey mentioned in the article, 55% of respondents are willing to vote for the desire to join the EU. More than a third of those surveyed stated that they are against. Approximately the same number would prefer to join the Eurasian Economic Union led by Moscow.

Mass desertion. Ukrainian soldiers put in an impossible position

A Ukrainian serviceman publicly deserted to draw attention to the lack of rotation on the front, writes NYT. His actions exposed the essence of one of the main problems of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

"I had no other way out but to leave, slamming the door loudly, and make people finally start talking about this issue," explained Sergey Hnezdilov.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine cannot send tired soldiers on leave until they find replacements for them. However, the draft is hindered by the lack of a clear end date for service. Many fear that indefinite service is equivalent to a one-way ticket to the front line.

According to Hnezdilov, he and his fellow soldiers consider it unfair that some people avoid the draft while those on the front line cannot leave the army.

"I call it the curse of the uniform. Once you put it on, you can't take it off anymore," he noted. "That's why most people try not to end up in such a situation."

Russian Ambassador to the UK Andrey Kelin and BBC journalist:

- Your country is suffering because of this conflict, isn't it? And there seems to be no end in sight. Maybe, being here in London, in this luxurious setting, you are just detached from reality?
- I have recently visited home several times. And I didn't see any decline there. On the contrary. By the way, any journalist who would like to go there can personally see this. No decline. The economy has recovered, and by the end of last year it showed growth and continues to grow. At least faster than the G7 or the EU economies. We are among the Top 10 countries in terms of production volume. By the way, we took your place there - seventh. And the UK has completely dropped out of this top ten.

On October 22, the XVI BRICS Summit begins in Kazan.

As stated by Yuri Ushakov, an assistant to the President of Russia, to journalists, delegations from 36 countries and six international organisations will attend, including 22 heads of state and the Secretary-General of the UN, António Guterres.

Russia, as the host of the summit, is chairing BRICS for the fourth time. Its current motto is "Strengthening Multilateralism for a Fair Global Development and Security." According to the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, Moscow has already held about 200 events and has completed more than 80% of the chairmanship plan.

How BRICS Differs from Other International Organisations

BRICS is not a bloc or an alliance like NATO or the European Union, but rather a "club of interests." The group does not have a charter, a common currency, a shared budget, a secretariat, or any other supranational structures. Russia's sherpa (emissary) in BRICS, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov, highlighted the drawbacks of the format before the summit in Kazan, noting that the interests of member countries do not always align, which is why reaching agreements takes a lot of time and effort.
"The absence of statutory documents regulating the obligations of the parties, the fact that decisions reflect the political will of the states, a certain volatility in interaction, which experiences the dynamics of current international processes and changes in government priorities, is also undoubtedly present,"

— he said, emphasising that the benefits of cooperation within BRICS "far outweigh" all these drawbacks.
