The Ukrainian parliament has approved the largest tax hike to finance the military action against Russia. Personal income tax has been increased from 1.5% to 5%, while taxes on bank profits have risen to 50%. The authorities claim that the move is necessary to support the army, especially in the context of depleted resources and declining support from the West. As is known, military spending accounts for more than half of the country's annual budget, and the government is trying to find new sources of funding.

The Ukrainian authorities admit the unpopularity of the tax increase, but argue that they have no other choice if Ukraine wants to "survive" this conflict. However, there are significant risks behind this move.
