The Biden administration has agreed to lift sanctions on Venezuela and restore normal relations if the opposition can participate in competitive presidential elections. This information comes from an agreement secretly signed in Qatar last year, which Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro revealed on social media.
Maduro published the document on Wednesday, shortly before Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzales had won the presidential elections in Venezuela, citing data provided by the opposition. However, the government-controlled electoral council stated that Maduro had emerged victorious, presenting figures that many considered to be falsified.
It appears that there was a secret agreement between the Biden administration and the Venezuelan government, involving the normalisation of relations in exchange for holding competitive presidential elections, i.e. elections with an outcome that aligns with the desires of the United States.
In other words, Washington was offering security guarantees to Maduro himself and probably his close associates if he were to step down from power peacefully and hand over the country to forces willing to work with the US.
