Pt. 1
"What is it like to be an instructor to students vastly superior to you..... To choose your six students to die, or the thousands of unknown androids she will save?"
Few have noticed, and even fewer have said anything about this, one of Nier Automata's most interesting personalities. Captain Black, leading the experimental YoRHa M squad in 11942. I will confidently say, this android has the most tragic and cruel fate of all the YoRHa we know. This is a story not only about the fate of an experimental squad, but also about the responsibility of a leader: about choice, about honour and nobility, about protesting, being a powerless puppet and about loving those who wish you dead. The captain showed himself as an extremely mature person: he was not a man of the system, knowing about the fate of the women's unit in Pearl Harbor and doubting their ‘success’, and in all official information, and that the same fate of the suicide bombers is destined to his unit.

Pt. 2
But knowing this, he still tried to find an individual personality in each student, to give time to each one, and in the end - he wished for their lives and went for it, knowing the impossibility of his desire. He was a man of honour, conscience and aristocracy. Yes, he was wrong, but he recognised it, despite the endless refusals of the command - he continued to make requests and protest, never let his emotions take over and was cold, knowing his lowly position - he fought, even disappointed in a part of the students during the rebellion - continued to think about them, even dying from A6's torture - felt nothing, but only thought about the fate of others to save. And he died nobly, without a drop of anger, and with sympathy for A6, who for him even being a maniac - remained a student worthy of care.

Pt. 3. Final.
Responsibility is what best characterised this android. It didn't apply not only to his squad, but also to the members of the resistance he happened to save. And he had fulfilled his duty to the end, not only as a leader, but also his moral duty in choosing his six non-ideal underlings along with hundreds or thousands of androids unknown to him. Maybe his dream of a normal life for the squad was partially realised, after all we still don't know the fate of Numbers 4, 9 and 22.
