Looks like DOGE has been a total flop.

During the election, Musk promised $2 trillion in cuts. After the inauguration, he lowered that to $1 trillion in cuts. As of last week, DOGE is claiming $150 billion in cuts, of which only $60 billion has receipts, and those receipts are filled with errors.

Today, following the news that Q1 Tesla income is down 71%, Musk says he is stepping back from government work to focus on Tesla.

So after 3 months and delivering at most 3% of the promised spending cuts, it seems like DOGE may be on its way out. A noble effort but doomed from the start.

This shouldn't come as a surprise. The vast majority of federal spending goes towards entitlements and the military. Trump was never going to touch either and if anything, he would be partial to increasing military spending which he of course did.

What's more, even if you could find $1 trillion in waste, fraud, and abuse without touching military and entitlements, Trump also promised to deepen the corporate tax cut along with additional tax cuts. It was never going to happen.

Just like with Iran, mass deportations, and tariffs, all of this was predictable from the jump if you just read between the lines. "You can just do things!!!" True but you need the right personnel, organization, discipline, and a plan— none of which Trump EVER has.

So let's just review where we are in April 2025, for posterity:
- The Pentagon is imploding over two classified intelligence scandals
- Half of the Cabinet is pushing for a war with Iran
- We are in a war in Yemen
- We are not even close to a deal in Ukraine
- We started a trade trade war which we backed down from but it crashed the economy anyway
- There are no mass deportations
- Trump wants migrant workers to self deport and then return legally
- DOGE has cut just <$60 billion and Elon is looking for an off-ramp
- 1,500 students are being deported for antisemitism
- 6/8 Ivy League schools are being shut down over antisemitism
- Vivek Ramaswamy will become governor of Ohio
- Mark Levin is working in the government
- Israel has received $12 billion
- Jeffrey Epstein files are being destroyed
- No purge of the FBI or other intelligence agencies

Third round of US-Iran negotiations underway in Oman, this time including experts.

Mysteriously, just as the negotiations started there was an explosion at Iran’s oil refinery in Bandar Abbas.

Yesterday in a Time Magazine interview, Trump explicitly said he would not be “dragged” into a war by Israel.

As the US gets closer to a deal, Israel will ramp up its efforts to sabotage diplomacy.

The third round of US-Iran negotiations were held in Iran this weekend on Saturday in Oman. Unlike the previous discussions, this meeting included direct negotiations as well as technical talks between experts sent by each side.

Both sides say the negotiations continue to be positive and constructive, a fourth round is scheduled for this Saturday. Trump said to reporters yesterday that he is confident they will reach a deal and avoid conflict.

Despite this optimistic assessment, there is still serious disagreement over the provisions of any potential deal. The US appears to have backed off of its demands for complete dismantlement of Iran's nuclear infrastructure.

Instead, the US has proposed that Iran may keep its civil nuclear program but it will have to import enriched material rather than enriching uranium themselves. Iran's foreign minister has said this is non-negotiable.

Israeli PM Netanyahu said in a speech yesterday that Israel would accept nothing less than complete dismantlement as well as restrictions on Iran's ballistic missile program.

Iran has about 5 more weeks before Trump’s deadline to make a deal.

Trump’s approval rating has fallen precipitously since the inauguration, especially with women and Hispanics.

If this trend continues it will be problematic for Republicans in the midterms. Historically, the party that holds the presidency almost never gains seats in the midterms.

Republicans already have a slim 2-vote majority and will most likely lose the House.

It’s almost a guarantee that Democrats will flip the House, impeach Trump and force Congress to a standstill.

In order to mitigate the losses, the logic inside the White House will be that Trump must moderate before the election. Then, shortly after the midterms in 2027, a number of Trump’s cabinet officials like JD Vance, Kristi Noem, and Marco Rubio will begin seeking the GOP nomination for 2028.

This is why I’ve been saying for a year that Trump needed to come in prepared for a blitz in 2025 or else he will face political constraints on his agenda in 2026, 2027, and 2028.

This is still possible with the upcoming budget reconciliation resolution and there is still time in 2025. But there must be urgency. So far we are not off to a great start, many unforced errors by Trump, Hegseth, Musk, and others.
