⁣Trump says US in 'final stages' on Iran

US President Donald Trump has indicated that he will maintain a military option on Iran, while waiting for Tehran's response.
Trump told reporters on Wednesday that the US is in the "final stages" on Iran. He said, "Either have a deal or we're going to do some things that are a little bit nasty, but hopefully that won't happen."
Later in the day, Trump said the situation was "right on the borderline." He added: "If we don't get the right answers, it goes very quickly. We're all ready to go."
Trump also urged Iran to comply with US demands, such as not possessing nuclear weapons in the future.
He said if he could save war by waiting a couple of days, he would like to do that. He added that if he can save people from being killed by waiting, "It's a great thing."
Also on Wednesday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in Tehran. Pakistan has been mediating talks between Iran and the US.
Iranian media say this is Naqvi's second trip to Tehran in the past ten days.
Pezeshkian posted on social media on Wednesday, "Iran has consistently honored its commitments and explored every avenue to avert war; all paths remain open from our side."
He added, "Mutual respect in diplomacy is far wiser, safer and more sustainable than war."
Iran's Tasnim News Agency, which is linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, quoted a source close to the negotiating team as saying Iran is reviewing a new text from the US that was sent through Pakistan.
It has become apparent that Iran and the US are still far apart over Iran's nuclear development and opening the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the US naval blockade of Iranian ports.

⁣Japan PM Takaichi asks ministers to resolve supply bottlenecks for naphtha items

Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae has instructed Cabinet ministers to eliminate bottlenecks in supply chains for paints, insulation, and other construction materials made from naphtha to ensure they get to companies that need them, including smaller ones.
Takaichi gave the instruction during a Cabinet meeting on the Middle East situation on Thursday.
She repeated her assurance that Japan should be able to secure enough supplies of crude oil and naphtha-derived petroleum products to last into next year by making greater efforts to procure them from alternative sources outside the Middle East.
She pointed out, however, that Japan is experiencing bottlenecks in supply chains of construction materials such as paints and insulation materials, as well as lubricating oil, which are all made from naphtha.
She said the government is addressing the problem with a particular focus on finding out how the situation is affecting smaller businesses, including building contractors and car maintenance workshops, which may not have strong bargaining power with suppliers.
Takaichi instructed transport minister Kaneko Yasushi and other ministers to eliminate the bottlenecks so the products can reach all the businesses that need them.
She also pointed out that 412 medical institutions have asked the government to release a total of 1.6 million plastic surgical gloves from its stockpile as an emergency measure. She said the government plans to start shipping out the gloves this Saturday.
Takaichi added that pharmacies have complained about a shortage of plastic containers. She asked health minister Ueno Kenichiro to take steps to eliminate an apparent bottleneck in this supply chain.

⁣Japan mayor set to become first with maternity leave

A western Japan city official plans to take maternity leave in what is believed to be a first among incumbent female mayors.
Mayor Kawata Shoko of Yawata City, Kyoto Prefecture, told reporters on Thursday that she plans to have time off before and after giving birth in September. The 35-year-old added that she is considering taking childcare leave as well.
Japan's Labor Standards Act stipulates maternity leave for workers but does not apply to city mayors. A city ordinance providing maternity leave for city employees also does not include mayors.
Kawata said she will use existing laws as a reference on the length of leave while coordinating preparations with the city assembly and others.
The city's deputy mayor is expected to stand in for her while she is on leave. To respond to a disaster and other important incidents, Kawata plans to attend meetings online and communicate with city officials by phone and email as long as she can.
Kawata won the mayoral election in November 2023 at the age of 33, becoming Japan's youngest-ever female city mayor.
Kawata said that she will try hard to win understanding of residents by telling them that she is making thorough preparations so that her leave would not affect the city's governance.
She said that she hopes this will become an opportunity to accelerate discussions toward a society where women in administrative positions are not forced to make a choice between work and family life.

⁣Campaigning starts for South Korea's nationwide local elections

Campaigning has kicked off in South Korea's nationwide local elections scheduled for June 3.
The official campaign period started on Thursday for the first nationwide elections since President Lee Jae Myung took office last year.
Polls are held every four years to decide mayors of cities including the capital Seoul and the second-largest city Busan, as well as provincial governors and other offices. Parliamentary by-elections are also being contested.
In Seoul, a newcomer candidate from the liberal ruling Democratic Party supporting President Lee criticized the city's real estate policies among others.
The candidate said elections in a democratic society are about choosing competent individuals and replacing incompetent ones.
Seoul's incumbent mayor of the conservative opposition People Power Party listed the problems of Lee's administration, and said voters must hold accountable a government that makes people's lives harder.
The elections are positioned as a test for Lee's administration, which will mark its one-year anniversary the day after voting takes place.
Polls show Lee's approval rating above 60 percent. The focus is on whether the governing party will gain wide-ranging support, or opposition parties recover lost ground.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department arrested the 23-year-old suspect, Nakamura Ren, on suspicion of dangerous driving resulting in injury.
Police say Nakamura got drunk last December and drove an illegally modified vehicle for about 10 kilometers on a public road in Nerima Ward, with a red light flashing and siren going off. The car smashed into a utility pole. His girlfriend in the passenger's seat had broken ribs.

Police arrested Mashimo for allegedly modifying the car illegally from April to July last year in violation of the Road Transport Vehicle Act.
They say both men have admitted to the charges.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson has said that the country's opposition to official US exchanges with Taiwan remains consistent, clear and firm.
Spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the remarks on Thursday. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he is willing to talk to Taiwan President Lai Ching-te before making a decision about possible US arms sales.
The spokesperson added that China also remains firmly opposed to selling US weapons to Taiwan.

Meanwhile, Secretary-General Pan Men-an of Taiwan's presidential office told a parliamentary meeting on Thursday that no telephone talks between Lai and Trump had taken place.

⁣Major Japan food retailers look to cut plastic use as costs jump

A major Japanese supermarket chain is changing the way it sells prepared food to customers as it faces rising costs for plastic containers. Prices of the material have gone up about 20 percent amid the Iran conflict.
Ito-Yokado normally sells deli items such as tempura and sushi rolls in individual containers.
To cut plastic use, it will ask customers to select the amount they want and place it in containers themselves.
The company says it plans to stop using plastic lids on packaging for some types of fresh meat. It will use kitchen wrap instead.
Also expected to be eliminated is the plastic film that bundles prepared noodles products.
Doi Hiroshi, an executive officer at Ito-Yokado, said, "We are thinking about what we can do alternatively, as we consider passing on costs as the last resort. Our company will try to come up with new ideas that benefit customers".
Another retail giant, Aeon, is looking at ways to simplify containers for its products. Such measures are expected to be adopted by more companies.
