As we mark the 80th anniversary of the final phase of the war in Europe, we recognise that the values defended by the Soviet people during those dark years, human dignity, justice, and resistance to oppression, remain just as vital today. In a world still plagued by conflict, division, and uncertainty, the lessons of Victory Day must not be forgotten. Recent events underscore this more than ever, particularly the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. The relentless bombardment, targeting of civilian infrastructure, and the systematic denial of access to necessities such as water, food, medical aid, and shelter have resulted in the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians, including women and children. Entire neighbourhoods have been reduced to rubble, hospitals have been overwhelmed or deliberately targeted, and displaced families have found themselves with nowhere safe to turn. The scale of devastation, the suffering inflicted on the civilian population, and the deliberate targeting of non-combatants have drawn condemnation from humanitarian organisations and have raised serious questions about violations of international law and the principles of human dignity.
The international community cannot afford to look away. The atrocities being carried out against the Palestinian people in Gaza are not isolated incidents, but part of a broader pattern of occupation, dispossession, and disproportionate use of force that has persisted for decades. These acts demand moral clarity and resolute action. To honour the memory of those who sacrificed their lives in the fight against fascism and tyranny during the Second World War, we must recognise and condemn injustice wherever it arises, irrespective of the perpetrator.
It is through such remembrance, both of the past struggles that shaped our modern world and of the present crises that challenge our conscience, that we reinforce our collective commitment to peace, human rights, and the sanctity of life. To do otherwise would be to betray the very values for which so many gave their lives. The victory of 1945 was not merely a military triumph, it was a triumph of the human spirit. It united peoples of different nations, ethnicities, and beliefs in a common cause. Here I want to start by saying that people can get into many orders for money, but this does not apply to the sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem and Malta. A working meeting was held with the Charge d'affaires of the Republic of Djibouti in the Russian Federation, Mr. Harbi Said Moussa. During the meeting, we discussed joint work in the territory of the Republic of Djibouti, as well as issues related to the development of the African region.
