NEMO Filesystem Quota
https://www.nemo.uni-freiburg.de/news/2022/04/04/nemo-quota/

In the past we often had questions about the quota of the HOME directory and the workspaces. Since this is not easy to find out for HOME, we have created a small script that shows the quota for HOME and the workspaces.

Scheduled High Performance Network Maintenance 08.08.2022
Published: 2 Aug 2022 by HPC Team Freiburg

We need to reboot all Omni-Path switches and replace some cables. Since the workspaces and MPI jobs depend on OPA, the entire cluster will be shut down for a few hours.

Date: 08.08.2022 8:00 - 18:00 CEST

The entire NEMO cluster will be shut down. No computations are possible during maintenance, so submit all jobs on time. Note that only jobs whose walltime fits within the time window until maintenance can be started. Jobs that cannot be started will be processed afterwards. However, if problems occur, the queue may need to be emptied. During maintenance, the operating system of the cluster is updated.
Cooling System Heat Problem
Published: 3 Aug 2022 by HPC Team Freiburg

Due to the hot temperatures in the next days, we have to gradually reduce the load on the cooling system. Therefore, we will shut down the NEMO machines in the next few days after finishing a job. After the maintenance on 08.08. we will see how many nodes we can start up again.

Testing Two-factor Authentication on NEMO
https://www.nemo.uni-freiburg.de/news/2023/08/08/Testing-2FA-on-NEMO/

We are currently testing two-factor authentication for NEMO logins. Currently, this security feature can be tested on our vis1/2 visualization nodes for password logins.
Enforcing Two-factor Authentication on NEMO
https://www.nemo.uni-freiburg.de/news/2023/10/11/Enforcing-2FA-on-NEMO/

As previously announced, we are testing 2FA for logins on NEMO. This feature will be enforced on all login nodes on NEMO in November. We will enforce 2FA logins on login2 on 06.11.2023 and on login1 2 weeks later on 20.11.2023.
FIDO2 and TOTP Token as a Second Factor for bwHPC and NEMO2
https://www.nemo.uni-freiburg.de/news/2024/02/27/security-keys/

The bwHPC team has been working on multi-factor authentication for some time in response to the intrusions into many HPC systems a few years ago. The use of a second factor to secure logins to services is becoming increasingly mandatory due to security threats. Standards such as WebAuthn/FIDO2 make it possible to secure online services with a second factor or to use a passkey instead of passwords.

Storage and Milan Partition Delivered
https://www.nemo.uni-freiburg.de/news/2024/08/12/storage-milan-partition/

The Weka Storage and the Milan partition of the new NEMO2 cluster have been delivered in the last weeks. In the next weeks, the companies will run tests and benchmarks and set up a final configuration for the systems. After that, we plan to start a first phase of NEMO2 with limited functionality, which we will increase over time.
End of Life and Milan Nodes in NEMO1
https://www.nemo.uni-freiburg.de/news/2024/11/15/milan-nodes-nemo1/

The AMD Genoa partition for NEMO2 will arrive on December 4. To make room for the new nodes, all old NEMO1 nodes will be decommissioned.
Genoa Nodes Delivered
https://www.nemo.uni-freiburg.de/news/2024/12/19/genoa-nodes-apu/

The AMD Genoa partition for NEMO2 was delivered on December 4th. This partition consists of 106 compute nodes with 192 cores and 768 GB RAM each (total >20k cores). In addition, four APU nodes with 4x AMD Instinct MI300A accelerator cards each and nine machines with 4x NVIDIA L40S each for machine learning and AI will be available in NEMO2.
NEMO2 Conda
https://www.nemo.uni-freiburg.de/news/2025/05/14/nemo2-conda/

We have switched from Miniconda to miniforge for conda environments. Miniforge uses conda-forge as the default repository and does not use the Anaconda repositories. However, additional repositories can still be configured and used, such as bioconda, etc. Miniforge is a software module that you can load: module avail miniforge (alias: module avail conda). The miniforge module automatically initializes the conda environment. You do not need to run conda init to add conda to your .bashrc or .bash_profile, which can cause problems with other software or environments. After loading the Miniforge module, you can directly activate a conda environment with the command conda activate .
NEMO2 Production Mode
https://www.nemo.uni-freiburg.de/news/2025/05/14/nemo2-start/

NEMO2 started slowly in January with only a few Genoa nodes and some test users until we went into production mode with Genoa nodes in April. In May, after the end of NEMO1, we also added most of the Milan nodes to NEMO2. This week we added our AMD Instinct MI300A APU and Nvidia L40A GPU nodes.
