👋 Meet David

Some people find teaching gradually. David did it by burning the old plan entirely and starting again from scratch.

Born in the United States, he did everything he was supposed to do. Good school, prestigious university, graduate degree, a successful career in management consulting with an MBA in finance. Eight years of it. Structured, respected, and - if he's honest - deeply unfulfilling.

So he tore up the script. Moved to Moscow. Started over on his own terms.

There's a Russian word worth knowing here. In Russian, the words for learning and teaching are the same. For David, that's not a linguistic curiosity - it's a philosophy. He is as passionate about acquiring knowledge as he is about sharing it, and it shows in every lesson he teaches.

His background hasn't gone to waste either. Where most English tutors stop at general English, David also specialises in Business English and Mathematics - bringing real boardroom experience into the classroom in a way that very few teachers can.

Outside of lessons he's a competitive powerlifter, having taken part in WRPF competitions. It sounds like an unlikely combination until you realise that language learning and lifting both demand exactly the same things - goal-setting, discipline and consistency. David understands that in his bones, as a teacher, as a student and as an athlete.

🏆 Racing To Win 🏅

Karting is one of those sports that teaches you something useful very quickly. You can have the best kart on the track, the right equipment, and all the confidence in the world - but if your technique is off, someone can will fly straight past you on the first corner.

Teaching is the same. The tutors who stand out aren't always the ones with the longest CVs or the most qualifications. They're the ones who show up consistently, read their students well, adapt when something isn't working, & genuinely care.

🤡 Happy April Fool's Day 🤡

A quick word of warning for today. If a student tells you they've finally mastered the third conditional, don't get too excited. If a parent messages to say their child actually enjoyed doing homework, proceed with caution. And if anyone claims the present perfect is their favourite tense - that's your cue to be very suspicious indeed.

April Fool's Day is, of course, one of the great gifts the English language has given the world. A day built entirely around misdirection, wordplay, and the art of keeping a straight face.

So if you're in lessons today, use it. Talk about April Fool's. Ask your students what jokes they know. Explore why something is funny in English but falls completely flat in Russian. You'll learn as much about your students as they'll learn about the language.

This is the bit they don't put in the brochure when you decide to become a private tutor. I think it’s really important to dream. It doesn’t matter how big or small those dreams are. I’ve always had a bit of a strange dream: I’ve always wanted to set the world record for the biggest lava eruption using baking soda and vinegar. The current world record holder, according to Guinness World Records, is Elmfield Steiner School in the UK. They set the record back in 2015 with an impressive eruption reaching 1.32 meters on top of an 8.62-meter (28 ft 3.3 in) volcano! I think everything is bigger in Russia, so I’d like to have a go at it one day!

👋 Meet Julia

Julia Moss grew up in the United Kingdom, reading books in the woods and chasing rabbits like Alice in Wonderland. Since she was little, she’s always been described as a ‘chatterbox’. For her, English is the language of love, childhood, imagination, humour, stories, accents, and all the tiny details that make speech feel alive.

After moving to Russia, she spent her teenage years going to language camps, took a TED-Ed Public Speech course, maintaining a life between two cultures. She became a prize-winner of the regional stage of the All-Russian English Olympiad and graduated from school with honours.

She later went on to study Pedagogical Education and English Language at MSPU, while already building her teaching practice: working with individual students, teaching groups, creating materials, and developing courses.

Julia is extremely creative by nature. She sings, acts, writes, designs educational games, and brings that same creative energy into her lessons. Her classes are built around the student: their goals, interests, personality, pace, fears, and even sense of humour.

For Julia, a good lesson is a safe space where students can speak, think, make mistakes, argue, laugh, and stop being afraid of expressing themselves in English. She has a special talent for getting even the shyest introverts to talk.
