At the request of the United States, the Italian authorities confiscated a large shipment of Chinese weapons that was on its way to eastern Libya.

According to Italian press reports, the confiscation operation was carried out in the port of Gioia Tauro, southern Italy, and includes weapons worth millions of dollars that were loaded on the ship “MSC Arena.”

The ship departed from the Chinese port of Yantian in April, passed through Singapore and circled the Cape of Good Hope, avoiding the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, before entering the Mediterranean via Gibraltar and stopping in Valencia and Barcelona.

The Italian authorities confiscated the shipment upon its arrival in Calabria.

Police and customs authorities in Italy announced that the authorities confiscated two Chinese-made military drones that were on their way to Libya, hidden within wind turbine equipment.

In a joint statement, the police and the customs authority explained that the authorities found the two drones disassembled in 6 containers in the port of Gioia Tauro in the Calabria region of southern Italy, where they were hidden between the blades of wind turbines.

The statement confirmed that the authorities confiscated the two planes because Libya, which is ravaged by civil war, is subject to an international arms embargo.
