Disagreements between Libyan armed groups and the Interior Ministry have caused the Ras Jedir border crossing between Tunisia and Libya to close for more than a month, negatively affecting both countries.

Mediation and attempts to find a solution to the crisis have failed, with a meeting held last Sunday with the participation of representatives of armed groups in western Libya to discuss the reopening of the crossing.

The altercations at the meeting escalated into fistfights between militia representatives and Libyan Interior Minister Imad Trabelsi, with the latter demanding the replacement of members of the pro-factional administration at the crossing.

Movement at the crossing has been completely halted since March 19th after limited skirmishes between Zuwara militias and a force affiliated with the Law Administration, which entered the crossing on the basis of an Interior Ministry mandate to control it.

The Tunisian Interior Ministry said in a statement that Trabelsi and al-Fiki discussed β€œthe situation at the Ras Jedir land border crossing” during a phone call.

According to the statement, the two sides agreed on β€œthe need to return to normal work at the crossing, and to continue to open it from both sides to the movement of passengers as soon as possible and to facilitate movement between the two brotherly countries.

Trabelsi and al-Fiki stressed β€œthe importance of the Ras Jedir border crossing and its vital role for the Tunisian and Libyan peoples”.

On the fourth of April, the head of the Libyan Joint Security Room, Major General Abdul Hakim al-Khaitouni, announced the receipt of the tasks of securing the β€œRas Jedir” crossing from the General Staff of the Libyan Army, in preparation for the reopening of the crossing to travelers.

The Minister of Interior in the outgoing Libyan β€œNational Unity” government, Imad Trabelsi, discussed after his talks at the Carthage Presidential Palace in Tunisia with President Kais Saied and Tunisian Interior Minister Kamal al-Fiqi, the details of this vital agreement.

β€œWe went to the Carthage Palace, and Tunisian Interior Minister Kamal al-Fiki and I met with President Kais Saied and discussed with him several topics of interest to both countries,” Trabelsi said.

Referring to the practical steps that will be taken on the ground, Trabelsi added: β€œWe agreed to open the Ras Jedir land border crossing between Libya and Tunisia,” explaining that β€œinstructions will be given to the competent Libyan and Tunisian authorities to start opening the crossing, and to take all measures.”

The Libyan minister pointed out that this decision comes β€œafter the completion of security work and security equipment,” stressing that β€œthe crossing will be opened to Libyan and Tunisian travelers from Libya to Tunisia and from Tunisia to Libya according to the laws in the two countries, as well as the return of trade exchange between them.”

The Ras Jedir border crossing between Libya and Tunisia witnessed armed clashes on March 19, causing it to be closed by Libyan and Tunisian authorities on the same day.

This came during a meeting between them on the sidelines of the tenth session of the ministerial meeting of the Arab-Chinese Cooperation Forum in the Chinese capital, Beijing.

According to a statement issued by the Dbeibeh government, the two sides discussed following up on a number of common issues, including completing the work of the joint committee on the similarity of names, and mechanisms to support the private sector in the two countries.

The statement explained that Saeed and Al-Dbeibeh agreed to β€œurge the Ministry of Interior in both countries to carry out the tasks assigned to it to open the crossing and complete maintenance and development work for the crossing from the Libyan side.”

The Libyan Ministry of Interior announced the partial reopening of the Ras Jedir border crossing on Thursday morning and its full reopening on June 20, after it had been closed for more than three months.

Imad Trabelsi, the Libyan Minister of Interior in the outgoing National Unity Government, said in a video statement with his Tunisian counterpart, Khaled Al-Nouri, that the border crossing will be reopened β€œin the interest of both countries without harm to any party.”

Trabelsi stated, β€œThe opening will be for humanitarian cases, special cases that have permission from the Tunisian and Algerian Ministry of Interior, and medical cases.”

Trabelsi added that he will meet with Al-Nouri on June 20 at the border crossing β€œto hold a meeting and reopen the crossing completely for all travelers.
