Morocco’s National Financial Information Authority has revealed a rise in money laundering-related activities, with the announcement of investigations into around 5,000 cases within this framework.

Jawhar Nafisi, Chairman of the Commission, presented the 2022 annual report to the Moroccan Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, stressing the increase in money laundering and terrorist financing.

The annual report indicated a 25.58% increase in the number of files referred to the judiciary compared to 2021.

The report indicated that half of these cases relate to acts of forgery or falsification of bank statements, with the emergence of new classifications linked to money laundering.

Morocco’s competent public prosecutor has launched investigations into the death of a minor girl inside a tourist villa in Marrakech.

Two Gulf nationals were arrested, while seven others of Kuwaiti nationality and three young Moroccan women were released on bail.

The sources indicated that the authorities have referred the case to the first instance court, where the suspects are being investigated in the circumstances of the victim’s death, which seemed mysterious.

Security sources said that the cause of death of the girl, who was in her second decade, may have been caused by excessive doses of drugs, and is awaiting an autopsy report to determine the true cause of her death.

The Court of First Instance in the city of Marrakech has sentenced a number of individuals involved in the death of an underage girl during a noisy party in a luxury villa.

The girl drowned in the pool during a night of alcohol and narcotics.

The court sentenced a Kuwaiti tourist to seven months in prison and a Moroccan domestic worker to ten months, and issued suspended prison sentences for nine other people, including seven Kuwaitis and two Moroccans, and ordered the reinstatement of the financial bail.

The case included serious criminal charges that included deceiving a minor, indecent assault, corruption, incitement to prostitution, and drug consumption.

The trial witnessed the hearing of the Kuwaitis accused by the Royal Gendarmerie to reveal the details of the incident, as investigations confirmed that the death resulted from drowning in the swimming pool of the villa during the party.

It is noteworthy that progress was recorded in the 2023 Organized Crime Index in Morocco, where it obtained an average of 4.8 on a scale ranging from 1 to 10, and reports indicated that Morocco is a source, destination, and transit point for victims of forced labor and sex trafficking.
