More than 90 people have died after a ferry capsized off the northern coast of Mozambique, according to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) quoting local authorities.

Rescue teams managed to save only five people out of around 130 believed to have been aboard the doomed ferry.

According to statements from the State Minister for the Nampula region, Jaime Neto, the ferry passengers were attempting to flee the mainland due to the outbreak of cholera.

The BBC noted that the ferry was a route from Llonga to Mozambique Island off the coast of Nampula when the tragic incident occurred.

A significant number of children were reported among the victims, according to Reuters news agency.
