Nigerian authorities say 40 people have been killed and others injured in an armed attack on the central region of the country.

Moussa Ibrahim al-Shams, the media commissioner of the local government, said gunmen on motorcycles carried out the attack in the Wase district of Plateau state, which is known for its long land and mining struggles, as well as sectarian violence.

Al-Shams said in a press statement on Monday evening that “gunmen stormed the village of Zorak and fired sporadically and burned a number of houses.”

The attack killed about 40 people, al-Shams said, stressing that Zorak is a popular mining area.

Local al-Shabaab leader Shafei Sambo said the death toll was at least 42 as a result of the raid carried out by militants in the area.

The Wassi region contains deposits rich in zinc and lead, while the state of Plateau is famous for its tin mining industry.

Plateau State is located in an area of constant tension between Nigeria's Muslim north and Christian south, and the state frequently sees violence between herders and farmers.

The Moroccan Mining Company announced a 13% decline in its revenues during the first quarter of this year, as it recorded revenues worth 1.935 billion Moroccan dirhams (equivalent to $194 million).

The company attributed this decline to its decision to reduce cobalt production at the Bouzar mine located in the Atlas Mountains, which was taken in light of the decline in global cobalt prices.

The Bouzar mine is considered an important source of cobalt, which is mainly used in the manufacture of electric car batteries, as the company supplies this metal to the German factories of BMW.

In a related development, Managem plans to start supplying Renault with cobalt by 2025, as part of its strategy to enhance cooperation with major global automobile manufacturers.

Nigerian authorities announced that they had lost hope of finding at least 20 miners alive, more than a week after a collapse led to them being trapped inside the mine.

The incident, which occurred on June 3, led to the detention of artisanal miners employed by a local company in the village of Galkogo in Shiroro district in the central state of Niger.

“Any hope of finding the miners alive has vanished,” said Ibrahim Odeh Hosseini, an official at the government’s Emergency Management Agency. “It has been eight days since they were buried inside the hole.”

He pointed out that “the rescue operation did not officially stop, but the families of the miners, who are Muslims, performed prayers in absentia for their relatives who were considered dead.
