The Ethiopian Foreign Minister, Tai Asqi Selassie, discussed with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, coordination of cooperation between Ethiopia and Russia in the UN Security Council and the “BRICS” group.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the discussions between the two sides focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, especially in the fields of trade, economy, science, technology and humanitarian affairs.

The Ethiopian and Russian ministers also affirmed their commitment to deepening political dialogue and harmonizing their approaches in the United Nations and the “BRICS” group, specifically during Russia’s presidency of the group.

On Tuesday, the National Oil Corporation of Libya announced its plan to drill 121 new wells to explore and exploit natural resources of oil and gas during the year 2024.

The corporation said in a statement that maintenance will be carried out for 1,335 other wells to ensure the sustainability of oil production and did not specify the locations and timetable for implementing these projects.

This step came as part of Libya’s efforts to increase oil and gas production, which represents about 90% of the country’s economic activity.

Libya’s oil production currently amounts to 1,220 million barrels per day, and the corporation expects crude production to exceed 1.5 million barrels per day by the end of 2025 before reaching two million within three years, according to official data from the corporation.

Oil production in Algeria decreased during the month of May by 6 thousand barrels per day, falling to 903 thousand barrels per day compared to 909 thousand barrels per day in April.

This decline comes in conjunction with the country implementing additional voluntary cuts within the production reduction policy followed by the OPEC+ alliance.

Algeria, among seven member states of the OPEC+ alliance, decided to extend the voluntary cuts that began in May 2023, amounting to a total of 1.65 million barrels per day, until the end of December 2025.

The voluntary reductions announced last November, amounting to 2.2 million barrels per day, were extended until the end of September 2024, and the reductions amounting to 2.

Nigerian authorities announced that they had lost hope of finding at least 20 miners alive, more than a week after a collapse led to them being trapped inside the mine.

The incident, which occurred on June 3, led to the detention of artisanal miners employed by a local company in the village of Galkogo in Shiroro district in the central state of Niger.

“Any hope of finding the miners alive has vanished,” said Ibrahim Odeh Hosseini, an official at the government’s Emergency Management Agency. “It has been eight days since they were buried inside the hole.”

He pointed out that “the rescue operation did not officially stop, but the families of the miners, who are Muslims, performed prayers in absentia for their relatives who were considered dead.
