β οΈ Last night, the AFU conducted an elaborate FPV attack on airfields across the Russian Federation.
π» Of course the damages are costly, several billion for repairs, and counter-intelligence could have been better to deter this altogether - as the operation to do this took them 18 months. More could have been done to prevent the attack.
π» In terms of actual damages, 7 (4 TU-95M2, 2 TU-22M2, 1 AN-24) aircraft appear to be destroyed of which, 6 are strategic bombers. Another 3 appeared to be in some ways damaged. But the headlines you read about '1/3 of Russia's strike force is crippled'. This is not so.
π» The Russian Long Aviation Force is comprised of 16 TU-160, 47 TU-95M2, and another 56 TU-22M. A total of nearly 140 long range strike vehicles. Russia only uses around 16 - 22 aircraft per attack.
π»The damages from yesterday are costly; in the billions, but this will likely have little to no effect on the overall strike power of the Russian Armed Forces. Russia relies more so on 'Geran' drones for attacks, and uses strategic aviation less frequently. I recall back to the days when the Navy was used to strike. There is a-lot of hidden strike power, but this is also a war of economics. Russia should save where it can.
β In terms of how this will impact negotiations and so forth, it will probably sour the already fragile negotiations, and when events like these do occur, we can always expect retaliation.
