Have you seen this pocket-sized predator before?

Nope, not yet 🤔
Growing up to 14 cm, the Black-backed Dwarf Kingfisher (Ceyx erithacus) is a petite predator that can dive into deep waters at top speeds to catch its prey. With two foveae in its eyes like other birds of prey, it can accurately pinpoint its prey and mitigate light refraction when entering the water.

One of the smallest kingfishers in Singapore, this rare and colourful visitor can be spotted between September and March! 🌈

Did you know that changes in dogs’ behaviour can be linked to pain and discomfort? 🐕

Yes, but why? 😥
Poor breeding or physical build can often lead to pain and discomfort, in turn causing issues in dogs’ movement and behaviour.

As part of the Science Behind Animal Behaviour series organised by the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS), join us in the upcoming webinar where Professor Daniel Mills will delve into the various types of pain and their impact on dog behaviour. He will also share on the new research avenues he is pursuing to help improve the assessment of pain in dogs.

Working from home is great, but if you’re a cat owner, some distractions may appear with your furball’s inquisitive and social nature! 🐱 Your cat may want to be noticed or perceive your concentration as a need for company.

To help manage this behaviour, plan playtime for your cat outside of work hours so that they can burn off energy. Consider making a cosy area filled with engaging toys for your cat, and strike a balance between work and personal time to reduce disruptions. 😊

Make a guess! What type of animal is a mousedeer?
Anonymous Poll
18%
Definitely a mouse 🐭
82%
Probably a deer 🦌
Joke’s on you! 😜 Mousedeer are neither mouse nor deer, but a group of hoofed mammals under the family Tragulidae.

Often featured in Malay folklore and portrayed as witty animals that outsmart more dangerous animals, the Lesser Mousedeer (Tragulus kanchil) is a shy and elusive mammal that feeds on leaves and shoots in mature forests. Unlike deer, they do not have antlers, but males have more prominent canines to defend themselves and challenge other males. Happy April Fool’s! 😉
