Наша экспедиция, которая путешествует по провинциям высокогорья Папуа — Новой Гвинеи, проехала из Маунт-Хагена до Гороки.
Одной из первых этнических групп, которые мы встретили, были чимбу, говорящие на одноименном языке, из провинции Восточное Высокогорье, территориальная племенная группа куман. Это племя «людей-скелетов», известных также как Омо Бугамо.
Интересна история происхождения «людей-скелетов» в культуре чимбу.
Много веков назад у чимбу стали пропадать соплеменники. В одной из поисковых экспедиций они обнаружили в горной пещере множество скелетов тех, кто некогда пропал.
Чимбу решили, что их людей украл Омо Масалай — злой дух леса.
Чимбу смекнули, что если они раскрасят свои тела в скелетов, то собьют злого духа с толку, поскольку тот не сможет увидеть их в темноте, перепутав со скелетами.
Так чимбу смогли подкрасться к Омо Масалаю и уничтожить монстра.
Постановка победы «людей-скелетов» над Омо Масалаем является центральной частью синг-синга чимбу.
Мы продолжаем наше путешествие и отправляемся в святую святых — Гороку, на одноименный фестиваль!

💀SKELETON PEOPLE: A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE FROM PAPUA NEW GUINEA 🇵🇬

Our expedition weaving through the rugged highlands of Papua New Guinea, has taken us from Mount Hagen to the enchanting Goroka.
One of the first ethnic groups we encountered were the Chimbu, who speak the Chimbu language, hailing from the Eastern Highlands province and belonging to the Kuman tribal group. This tribe is known as the "skeleton people”, also referred to as the Omo Bugamo.
The origin story of the “Skeleton people" in Chimbu culture is quite fascinating. Many moons ago, the Chimbu began to notice something strange – their own people were vanishing without a trace. During one of their search expeditions, they discovered numerous skeletons in a mountain cave, believed to be the remains of their missing kin. The Chimbu concluded that their people had been abducted by Omo Masalai, the malevolent forest spirit.
In a brilliant twist, the Chimbu hit upon a plan to outwit Omo Masalai. They painted themselves to resemble skeletons, believing that in the darkness, the spirit would be none the wiser. Mistaking them for real skeletons, Omo Masalai was caught off guard, and the Chimbu seized the moment to confront and conquer the monstrous entity.
The celebration of the victory of the "skeleton people" over Omo Masalai is a central part of Chimbu's sing-sing tradition.
Our adventure continues, as we journey to the legendary Goroka, where the eponymous festival awaits!
