Друзья, наша камерная группа вернулась с летнего Ямала! Количество моих поездок на Край Земли (именно так переводится «Ямал» с ненецкого) уже перевалило за десять, но Ямал не перестаёт удивлять и раз за разом просто сбивает с ног своей аутентичностью и необузданностью. Это был настоящий ретрит у берегов Карского моря и холодных озёр полярной тундры, где в двухстах с лишним километрах севернее полярного круга ненецкие оленеводы кочуют со своими стадами в поисках лучших летних пастбищ.
Мы рыбачили, играли, смеялись, дружили с очень искренними и настоящими людьми (именно так переводится с неннцкого самоназвание этого народа) и делали перекочевку с их тысячным стадом! Уникальное путешествие - маленькая жизнь на Ямале!

The number of my trips to the End of the Earth (this is how Yamal is translated from Nenets) has already exceeded ten, but Yamal never stops to amaze me over and over again and just knocks down with its authenticity. It was a real retreat at the shores of the Kara Sea and the cold lakes of the polar tundra, where, more than two hundred kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, Nenets reindeer herders wander with their herds in search of the best summer pastures.
We fished, played, laughed, made friends with very sincere and real people (this is how the self-name of this people is translated from the Nenets language) and made a migration with their thousand-strong herd! A unique journey - a little life in Yamal!

Друзья, всех горячо поздравляем с Днём Знаний! По случаю праздника и нашего возвращения с Ямала, мы хотим рассказать вам и показать, что действительно важно для ненцев, какие слова являются ключевыми в ненецкой культуре и определяют их быт.

«Ты» - северный олень по-ненецки. Безусловно, олень является важнейшим элементом кочевой культуры ненцев. Олень служит ненцам транспортом, основой питания и предметом для бартерных операций, вся одежда и обувь ненцев изготавливается из шкуры оленя, а чум зимой укрывается двухслойной покрышкой (нюк) из оленьих шкур. Шкурами же выстилается спальное место в чуме.
Нет единого мнения по поводу того, кто же за кем следует по тундре: олени за людьми или люди за оленями. Но любой ненец вам сходу скажет, что «без оленя мы никуда, вся наша жизнь подчинена жизни оленей». Поэтому человек и олень в тундре испокон веков подстраиваются друг под друга и образуют самый настоящий симбиоз.
Многие ненцы, говоря о сохранении традиционного образа жизни отвечают так: «Куда же я уеду из тундры? А на кого я оставлю оленей? - Пока есть олени, я в ответе за них и я буду продолжать дело моего отца и деда».

Dear friends, today is the first day of school, and we start our series of Yamal stories. We want to tell you and show you what is really important for Nenets, which words are key in the Nenets culture and determine their life.

"Ty" is a reindeer in the Nenets language. Of course, reindeer is the most important element of the Nenets nomadic culture. Reindeer serves as a transport for Nenets, the basis of food and an item for barter operations, all clothes and shoes of Nenets are made of reindeer fur, and the chum is covered in winter with a two-layer cover (nyuk) of reindeer hide. The sleeping place in the tent is lined with skins.
Nobody can say for sure who follows whom across the tundra: reindeer follow people or people follow reindeer. But any Nenets will tell you right off the bat that "without a reindeer we can not live, our whole life is subordinated to the life of reindeer." Therefore, man and reindeer in tundra from time immemorial adjust to each other and form a real symbiosis.
Speaking about the preservation of the traditional way of life, many Nenets answer like this: “How can I leave tundra? Who will I leave the reindeer with? "As long as there are reindeer, I am responsible for them and I will continue the work of my father and grandfather."

⛺️ МЯ’ (ЧУМ). СПРАВОЧНИК КОЧЕВОЙ КУЛЬТУРЫ НЕНЦЕВ 🇷🇺

Чум для ненцев это не просто традиционное жилище, это центр всей жизни семьи, который воспринимается как целый мир. Наверху у чума есть отверстие для вентиляции и дымохода, оно символизирует местоположение солнца днём и месяца ночью. Наклонные шесты (которых в чуме до 40 штук), покрытые шкурами, ассоциируются с воздушной сферой, которая окутывает Землю.
Чем богаче семья, тем больше по своим размерам чум. Издревле считалось, что у ненцев с хорошим достатком чум должен быть тупоконечный, а остроконечный чум был признаком бедняков.
Однако тут нужно учитывать, что сегодня ненцы, что стоят в лесу, ставят большие чумы, поскольку там нет дефицита древесины, а тепло не выдувается быстро из жилища, укрытого деревьями. Прямо обратная ситуация в открытой тундре. В отсутствие дров здесь ставят чумы куда меньших размеров.
Простое коническое сооружение из шестов покрывают полотнищами из оленьих шкур (нюками). Для покрытия чума в зимнее время требуется до 80 оленей. Как и в одежде, верхний слой мехом наружу, а внутренний - ворсом вовнутрь. Это призвано удерживать тепло и служить максимально долго. Нюки являются семейной реликвией, поэтому если какая то шкура в нюке испортилась, ее просто заменяют на новую.

⛺️ MYA’ (CHUM). GUIDEBOOK OF NENETS NOMADIC CULTURE 🇷🇺

For Nenets people chum is not just a traditional dwelling, it is the center of the whole family life, which is perceived as a entire world. At the top of chum there is an opening for ventilation and chimney, which symbolizes location of the sun during the day and moon at night. The inclined poles (there are up to 40 in the chum), covered with skins, associate with the air sphere that envelops the Earth.
The richer the family, the larger the chum. Since ancient times, it was believed that rich Nenets should have a blunt-pointed chum, and a sharp-pointed chum was a sign of the poor people.
However, it should be considered that today those Nenets who stay in the forest, set up big chums, as there is no shortage of firewood, and the heat is not quickly blown out of the dwelling, as the dwelling is sheltered with trees. The situation is just the opposite in the open tundra. In the absence of firewood, chums of much smaller sizes are set up here.
A simple conical structure of poles is covered with reindeer skins (nyuk). It requires up to 80 reindeer slaughtered to cover chum in winter. The same as with clothes, the top layer is furred outward, and the inner layer is furred inward. This is designed to keep warmth and serve as long as possible. Nyuk is a family heirloom, so if some skin in a nyuk deteriorates, it is simply replaced with a new one.

В условиях тундры человек просто не может выжить один. Во многих северных районах России коренные жители перешли на производственное кочевание, при котором в чуме или яранге живут несколько оленеводов, но на Ямале сохранилось кочевание семьями (его ещё называют бытовым). Так что обычно в чуме живёт оленевод и его семья.

Ненцы относятся к самодийским народам (некогда ошибочно названным «самоедами»). Само название «самодийцы» от русской диалектной формы самодин, использовавшейся в особенности в русской речи нганасан и энцев (других самодийских народов) в качестве самоназвания этих групп. То есть, даже термин «сам, один» фактически подчёркивает, что для ненцев не так важна родовая структура общества, как собственно семья, его первичная ячейка.

Отвечая на вопрос, почему семья важна для жителей тундры, ненцы удивляляются этой формулировке: с точки зрения ненцев, если у человека нет семьи, то он, по большому счету, не состоялся. Вот, что говорят сами ненцы: «Если бы у отца не было жены, кто бы ему готовил? Не было бы детей, кто бы ему помогал? Когда есть семья, то становится легче. Семья - важно, потому что как же без семьи вообще можно?»

In the conditions of tundra, a person simply cannot survive alone. In many northern regions of Russia, indigenous people switched to industrial nomadism, where several reindeer herders live in a chum or yaranga, but in Yamal they saved family nomadism (it is also called household nomadism). So normally a reindeer herder and his family live in chum.

Nenets belong to Samodeic peoples (also named “Samoyeds”). The name "Samodeic" comes from the Russian dialectal form “Samodin”, which was used especially in the Russian speech of the Nganasans and the Enets (other Samoyed peoples) as an endonym of these groups. That is, even the term “samodin” (translated as “himself, the one” actually emphasizes that for the Nenets the clan community structure is not so important as the family itself as the primary cell of society.

Answering the question why family is so important for tundra inhabitants, Nenets are surprised at this question. - From the Nenets point of view, if a person does not have a family, then, he/she has not just succeeded in his life. This is what the Nenets themselves say: “If my father had no wife, who would cook for him? There would be no children, who would help him? When you have a family, it becomes easier. Family is important, because how is it possible without a family at all? "

Ещё в начале 20 века исследователи отмечали, что с точки зрения ненцев, кочевая жизнь интереснее оседлой. Если человек вынужден «осесть», потеряв оленей, это расценивается как великая неудача, и он, конечно, мечтает снова начать кочевать, или, как говорят северяне, «каслать». «Каслают те люди, у которых оленей хватает. А для того, чтобы олени питались хорошо, нужно каслать все время. Это важно, чтобы стало целое осталось. И для людей каслать тоже полезно: тогда они все время двигаются. Можно видеть новых людей, заводить знакомства» - говорят сами ненцы.
Кочевание у ненцев происходит по определенным маршрутам. Зимой обычно перебираются в более южные районы (на так называемую «варгу» - родовую территорию), где немного теплее и легче добыть топливо. А летом кочуют на север, ближе к морю, где сильнее ветер и меньше комаров, донимающих оленей. Необходимость кочевать вызвана, прежде всего, тем, что олени не могут слишком долго пастись на одном месте: им просто не хватит корма. Летом, в условиях изобилия грибов, ягод и свежего травяного корма, олени двигаются намного быстрее, что требует делать перекочевка по несколько раз в неделю. Каждый переход в среднем составляет 5-10 километров.
Общая протяжённость кочевий у ямальских оленеводов может достигать 1500 километров в год. Перекочевка у ненцев происходит по своим законам, сложившимися в тундре за много поколений. Старейшины решают о разделе территории, на которой каслает та или иная семья.

Back in the early 20th century, researchers noted that from the Nenets point of view, nomadic life is more interesting than sedentary. If a person is forced to “settle down”, having lost the reindeer, this is regarded as a great failure, and he, of course, dreams of starting to migrate again. “Only those people who have enough reindeer are migrating. And in order for the reindeer to eat well, you need to feed them all the time. It is important so that the herd survive. And for people, migrating is also good: they move all the time. You can see new people, make acquaintances” - say the Nenets people.
Nenets migrate along certain routes. In winter, they usually move to the more southern regions (to the so-called "varga" - ancestral territory), where it is a little warmer and easier to get firewood. And in summer they migrate north, closer to the sea, where the wind is stronger and there are fewer mosquitoes pestering reindeer. The need to roam is first of all caused by the fact that reindeer cannot graze in one place for too long: they simply do not have enough food. In summer, when mushrooms, berries and fresh grass are abundant, reindeer move much faster, which requires migrating several times a week. Each transfer is on average 5-10 kilometers.
The total length of Yamal reindeer herders’ migrating route can reach 1,500 kilometers per year. The Nenets migrate according to their own rules, which have developed in the tundra for many generations. The elders decide on the territory within which the certain family migrates.

🦌 ЯРКОЛАВА (ЛОВЛЯ АРКАНОМ). СПРАВОЧНИК КОЧЕВОЙ КУЛЬТУРЫ НЕНЦЕВ 🇷🇺

Ненцы устраивают ярколава едва ли не каждый день. Стадо оленей пригоняют к стойбищу. Часть специально обученных ездовых оленей сразу попадает в загон, называемые кораль, а другая (в том числе много строптивых бычков) вначале остается на свободе. Пастухи с собаками образуют вокруг стойбища кольцо и начинают гонять по нему оленей, вылавливая арканами (называемыми «тынзян») из проносящегося мимо стада тех, кто им нужен. Одна из важнейших целей этого мероприятия - отловить оленей, которых сегодня собираются запрячь в нарты. Кроме того, ярколава во многом нужна для постоянного контакта животных с человеком: олени в больших ненецких стадах хотя и домашние, но далеко не ручные. Поэтому ездовых оленей просто необходимо постоянно отлавливать и объезживать. Молодые ненцы во время ловли оленя соревнуются между собой, стараясь превзойти друг друга в ловкости и меткости.
Известно, что во время перекочевки ненцы делают переход по тундре около 10 километров. Но мало кто знает, что за время сбора стада и отлова оленей (а летом это случается почти каждый день) оленеводы нередко наматывают до 80 километров в день!

🦌YARKOLAVA (LASSO CATCHING). GUIDEBOOK OF NENETS NOMADIC CULTURE 🇷🇺

The Nenets practice yarkolava almost every day. Reindeer herd is driven to the camp. Some of the specially trained riding reindeer immediately caught into the corral, while the other (including many obstinate bulls) initially remain outside. Herders with their dogs form a ring around the camp and begin to chase the reindeer along it, catching with lassos (called "tynzyan") those they need from the herd. One of the most important goals of this event is to catch the reindeer that are going to be harnessed to the sleds today. In addition, yarkolava is in many ways needed for constant contact of animals with humans: reindeer in large Nenets herds, although domestic, are far from tame. Therefore, sled reindeer simply need to be constantly caught and trained. Young Nenets men, while catching reindeer, compete, trying to surpass each other in agility and accuracy.
It is known that during the migration the Nenets make the transition along the tundra for about 10 kilometers. But few people know that during the gathering of the herd and the capture of reindeer (and in summer this happens almost every day), reindeer herders often cover up to 80 kilometers a day!

Экспедиция на Ямал в сентябре: в чем плюсы?
➕ ещё относительно тепло, но, тем не менее, атмосфера севера остаётся прежней, нет только снега. Зато какие пейзажи нам открываются, которые зимой под снегом не видны!
➕ это идеальное время, чтобы поймать «арктический дзен» 😌🙏
➕Ненцы в прохладную погоду одеваются в традиционную одежду. А традиционные платья ненецких женщин - это отдельная эстетика😍
➕ каслание несколько раз в неделю. Летом ненцы откармливают оленей на зиму, поэтому, они постоянно кочуют в поисках новых пастбищ. Застать и сделать фото этого процесса👍
➕ северные лакомства: вы когда-нибудь видели поле, усыпанное брусникой?🍓 а оленей, идущих и сметающих грибы, как комбайны?😅
➕ отличное время для северного сияния. Пусть нам повезёт! 🤩🙏

➕Nenets dress in traditional clothes in cool weather. And traditional dresses of Nenets women are a real aesthetic
➕ migrating several times a week. In summer, the Nenets feed reindeer for the winter, therefore, they constantly migrate in search of new pastures. Catch and take a photo of this process👍
➕ Northern treats: Have you ever seen a field strewn with lingonberries? 🍓 And reindeer walking around and sweeping mushrooms like harvesters? 😅
