Zangbeto ceremony appears a part of Voodoo culture in Benin and Togo. Zangbeto are the traditional guardians of the night in Voodoo religion which are known as the "Nightwatchmen". Their costumes resemble a haystacks, are highly revered and act as an unofficial police force patrolling the streets, watching over people and tracking down criminals and presenting them to the community to punish.

🇧🇯БЕНИН: ЗДРАВСТВУЙ ВУДУ НОВЫЙ ГОД🎄

В этот день поклонники культа вуду празднуют Новый год, который символизирует «полное обнуление»0️⃣👌
Сначала наша команда побывала на церемонии жертвоприношения, где богам были принесены баран и курица🐏🐔 впечатляющее зрелище

Затем мы посмотрели танцы, и король пригласил нас в свою резиденцию, где собрались высокопоставленные лица

Мы также посмотрели церемонию Zangbeto. По традиции считается, что внутри стогов сена нет людей. И нам даже демонстрировали, - открывали сено и показывали, что внутри никого нет, после чего стог благополучно продолжал свой танец💃 магия, не иначе 🪄😃

И далее был завораживающий танец Egungun, где вызывают духов предков🧞

On this day, worshippers of the voodoo cult celebrate the New Year, which symbolizes "complete zeroing" 0️⃣👌
First, our team attended a sacrifice ceremony, where a sheep and a chicken were brought to the gods🐏🐔 It was an impressive sight

Then we watched the dances, and the king invited us to his residence, where dignitaries gathered

We also watched Zangbeto ceremony. Traditionally, it is believed that there is nobody inside the haystacks. And they even demonstrated it to us - they opened the hay and showed that there was no one inside, after which the haystack continued its dance💃 Magic 🪄😃

And then there was the enchanting dance Egungun, where the spirits of the ancestors are summoned🧞

🇧🇯БЕНИН: ЛЮДИ БЕТАММАРИБЕ🛖

Племя бетаммарибе (мн. ч) или отаммари (ед. ч.) живут в домах-крепостях (tata somba), которые, внесены в список Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО.

Люди бетаммарибе практикуют ритуальное шрамирование. Эти шрамы – форма пожизненной идентификации (своего рода ID в виде татуировки), которые определяют принадлежность человека к определенному племени, а также содержат закодированную информацию. Первые шрамы начинают наносить уже в возрасте 2-3 лет. Дополнительные метки добавляются в пубертатный период, перед свадьбой, после рождения ребенка, в качестве формы визуального контакта. Шрамы располагаются на областях от лица до живота и спины. На стены домов они наносят такие же узоры🛖

🇧🇯BENIN: BETAMMARIBE PEOPLE🛖

Betammaribe (plural) or Otammari (sing) people live in fortress houses (tata-somba) which are listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site.

Betammaribe practice ritual scarification.
Not only for beauty, but also for identification. These scars are a form of lifelong identification (a kind of ID in the form of a tattoo), which determines a person’s belonging to a particular tribe, and also contains encoded information. The first scars are made in the age of 2 or 3. Additional tags are added during puberty, before wedding, after giving birth, as a form of visual contact. Scars are applied onto the body from the face to the abdomen and back. They also put such drawings on the walls of their houses🛖

🇧🇯 ЗАНГБЕТО В РЕЛИГИИ ВУДУ 📿

Сегодня расскажем про Зангбето («ночных стражей») и про церемонию, на которой побывали участники нашей экспедиции на Фестиваль Вуду в январе.

Зангбето - это часть культуры вуду и традиционное «неофициальное учреждение полиции и безопасности».
Первоначально созданные для отпугивания врага, Зангбето в костюмах, напоминающих стога сена, бродят по улицам, чтобы обнаружить воров и ведьм, а также обеспечить закон и порядок.

Они способны впадать в транс, который, согласно традиции, позволяет их телам быть населенными духами, обладающими особыми знаниями и мудростью.
Однако легенда гласит, что под костюмами нет людей, только духи ночи.

🇧🇯 ZANGBETO IN VOODOO RELIGION 📿

Today we'll tell you about the Zangbeto (“night guards”) and the ceremony, which was attended by the members of our expedition to Voodoo festival in January.

The Zangbeto cult is a part of Voodoo culture and a traditional informal police and security institution.
Originally created to scare the enemy away, Zangbeto in the costumes that resemble haystacks, will wander around the streets to detect thieves and witches and to provide law and order. They are able to fall into a trance which, according to tradition, enables their bodies to be inhabited by spirits who possess special knowledge and wisdom.
However, the legend tells that there are no humans under the costume, only spirits of the night.

In the last photo you will see what spirit of the night the ceremony viewers discovered this time 🙂

Во время нашей экспедиции в Бенин участники заехали в деревню около Абомея, которая славится своим гончарным ремеслом.

Королевство Абомей, впоследствии получившее название Королевство Дагомея, возникло в начале XVII века. Дагомейские правители разбогатели в основном на торговле с соседними народами рабами. Только Агаджа, пятый дагомейский правитель, понял, что гораздо выгоднее установить прямые контакты с европейцами.
Во времена Агаджи в Дагомее возник культ вуду. Вначале король был единственным посредником между людьми и богом и только он имел право вступать в контакт со сверхъестественными силами. Но позже возникла потребность в посредниках более низкого ранга. Так появились глиняные фигурки вуду, позднее распространившиеся по всей Западной Африке.

Нашей команде также удалось встретить настоящего короля Вуду и стать свидетелем церемонии жертвоприношения, посвященной хранителю дома.

🇧🇯NOTES ABOUT BENIN: AT THE VOODOO KING📿

During our expedition to Benin, the participants stopped at a village near Abomey, which is famous for its pottery.

The Kingdom of Abomey later called the Kingdom of Dahomey, arose at the beginning of the 17th century. Dahomey rulers got rich mainly on the slave trade with neighbours. Only Agadzha, the fifth Dahomean ruler, realized that it was much more profitable to establish direct contacts with the Europeans.
A voodoo cult arose in Dahomey during the time of Agadzhi. In the beginning, the king was the only mediator between people and God, and only he had the right to come into contact with supernatural forces. But later other intermediaries of a lower rank became necessary. This is how the clay voodoo figurines appeared and later spread throughout West Africa.

Our team also managed to meet the real Voodoo king and witness the sacrifice ceremony dedicated to the guardian of the house.

🇧🇯🇹🇬 ТРАДИЦИИ: ID ПЛЕМЕНИ БЕТАМАРИБЕ🧑🏾‍🦱

В современном мире сложно представить, что кто-то может обходиться без удостоверений личности, паспортов и прочих идентифицирующих документов. Как иначе понять, что за человек перед тобой?

В племени бетамарибе (Бенин и Того, Западная Арфика) для получения важной информации о других используют ритуальное шрамирование. По шрамам можно определить принадлежность к племени, возраст и статус их обладателя. Шрамы являются своего рода ID, этаким «биопаспортом».

Шрамы располагаются на областях от лица до живота и спины.
Первая скарификация проводится уже в 2-3-летнем возрасте. И даже такие маленькие дети при этом не плачут.
Дополнительные метки добавляются в пубертатный период, перед свадьбой, после рождения ребенка и по другим важным случаям, изменяющим социальный статус бетамарибе.

In the modern world, it is difficult to imagine that someone can live without identity cards, passports and other identifying documents. How else to understand what kind of person is in front of you?

In the Betamaribe tribe (Benin and Togo, Western Arfika), ritual scarification is used to obtain important information about others. Scars can be used to determine tribal affiliation, age and status of their owner. Scars are a kind of ID, a kind of "biopass".

Scars are located on areas from the face to the abdomen and back.
The first scarification is carried out already at the age of 2-3. And even such small children do not cry during the scarification.
Additional tags are added during puberty, before the wedding, after the birth of a child and on other important occasions that change the social status of the Betamaribe.

🇧🇯🇹🇬 ВУДУ - РЕЛИГИЯ ЗЛА?👹📿

Вуду – религия, возникшая на стыке христианства и западноафриканских верований.
По фильмам мы знаем, что вуду - это религия зла, а колдуны вуду оживляют мертвецов, управляют людьми при помощи кукол и приносят страдания своим жертвам.

На самом деле вуду – это религия исцеления!
Священники и верующие встречаются, чтобы воспеть божества и обратиться к духам с просьбой вылечить конкретного человека.
Важную роль в общении с духами играют танцы. Именно они приводят человека в нужное состояние.
Жертвы колдуны действительно приносят. Только убивают для этого не людей, а животных. Поклонники вуду верят, что кровь – это энергия, помогающая духам общаться с людьми.
А куклы Вуду используют для переноса болезни на неодушевлённую вещь.

Voodoo is a religion that emerged at the intersection of Christianity and West African beliefs.
We know from the films that voodoo is a religion of evil, and voodoo sorcerers revive the dead, control people with dolls and bring suffering to their victims.

In fact, voodoo is a healing religion!
Priests and believers meet to sing of the deities and ask the spirits to heal a particular person.
Dances play an important role in communicating with spirits. It is they who bring a person to the desired state.
Sorcerers do bring sacrifices. Only they do not kill people for this, but animals. Voodoo fans believe that blood is the energy that helps spirits communicate with people.
And Voodoo dolls are used to transfer disease to an inanimate thing.

Одна из достопримечательностей Бенина, признанная ЮНЕСКО объектом всемирного наследия, это Ворота невозврата, которые находятся на берегу Гвинейского залива в городке Вида.
Когда-то эта территория Бенина (равно как и часть территории современного Того), входила в состав Королевства Дагомеи, которое вело активную работорговлю и стало крупнейшим в Западной Африке экспортёром рабов в Америку.
Ворота завершают дорогу, по которой вели на корабли невольников, чтобы увезти навсегда в их новую полную страданий жизнь.
Дагомея процветала благодаря работорговле, а Вида была главным портом экспорта рабов.

🇧🇯BENIN: GATE OF NO RETURN IN OUIDAH🧑🏿‍
.
One of the sites of Benin, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, is the Gate of No Return, which is located on the shores of the Gulf of Guinea in the town of Ouidah.
Once this territory of Benin (as well as part of the territory of modern Togo) was part of the Kingdom of Dahomey, which led an active slave trade and became the largest exporter of slaves to America in West Africa.
The gate ends up the road that led the slaves to the ships in order to take them away forever into their new life of suffering.
Dahomey flourished due to the slave trade, and Ouidah was the main export port for slaves.
