Команда MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS прибыла в Бамако — столицу Мали.
Бамако стоит на реке Нигер, питающей весь регион, и богатой не только вкуснейшей рыбой (уже попробовали вчера на ужин), но и крокодилами. На языке народа бамбара, на котором здесь, так или иначе, говорят все, «бама ко» означает «река крокодилов».
Мы прогулялись по центральному рынку, рынку ремесленников и рынку фетишей. Местные уверяют, что сушеные головы обезьян и лошадиные пенисы способны излечить от малярии.
Примечательно, что само название государства Мали, некогда великой одноименной западно-африканской империи, на языке мандинка означает просто «бегемот».
Получилось почти как в песне Красной Шапочки: «крокодилы, бегемоты...»

The MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS team arrived in Bamako, the capital of Mali.
Bamako stands on the Niger River, which feeds the entire region, and is rich not only in delicious fish (we already tried it yesterday for dinner), but also in crocodiles. In the language of the Bambara people, which everyone here, one way or another, speaks, "bama ko" means "river of crocodiles".
We walked around the central market, artisan market, and fetish market. Locals claim that dried monkey heads and horse penises can cure malaria.
It is noteworthy that the very name of the state of Mali, the once-great West African empire of the same name, in the Mandinka language means simply "hippopotamus".
It turned out almost like in the song of Little Red Riding Hood: "crocodiles, hippos ..."

Команда MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS начала своё путешествие по Мали 🇲🇱 с исследования западной части страны, населенной преимущественно народами бамбара и мандинка.
Мандинка (малинке) — наследники средневековый империи Манди, простиравшейся от Сенегала до Буркина-Фасо с запада на восток и от Мали до Гвинеи с севера на юг.
Танцы ЮГУБА являются одним из наиболее любопытных выражений материальной культуры мандинка, сохранившихся до наших дней.
Танцы выполняются в масках. Традиционно маски появлялись только по специальным случаям.
Команда экспедиции приняла участие в ритуальных танцах в красивом месте у скал Мандинго.
Мандинка выступили с 4 сменами масок (а значит, и костюмов).
Маска ЮГУБА (белый соломенный костюм) символизирует счастье, и танец выполняется для специальных церемоний.
Маска НАМА (темно-зелёный инфернальный костюм) является символом зимы. Танец выполняется для оповещения деревни о наступлении сезона дождей.
Маска УОРОНИ (пышный белый костюм с разноцветными вкраплениями) символизирует фермерское дело и плодородие. Танец призывает жителей идти на полевые работы.
Маска ЧАМПАНЗЕ (чёрный костюм обезьяны) символизирует урожай арахиса. Танец призван поторопить сельчан к уборке созревшего земляного ореха, пока его не уничтожили шимпанзе.
Завтра команда перелетает в загадочный Тимбукту, на самый юг Сахары!

🇲🇱 YUGUBA: ANIMIST DANCES IN MASKS 👹
The MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS team began the journey across Mali🇲🇱 by exploring the western part of the country, populated mainly by the Bambara and Mandinka.
Mandinka (Malinke) are heirs of the medieval empire Mandi that was stretched from Senegal to Burkina Faso from west to east and from Mali to Guinea from north to south.
Yuguba dances are one of the most curious expressions of Mandinka material culture that have survived till nowadays.
The dances are performed with masks. Traditionally, masks only appeared on special occasions.
The expedition team attended the ritual dances in the scenic place near the Mandingo cliffs.
Mandinka performed with 4 changes of masks (and also costumes).
The YUGUBA mask (white straw-like suit) symbolizes happiness. The dance is performed for special ceremonies.
The NAMA mask (dark green infernal costume) is a symbol of winter. The dance is performed to alert the village of the coming rainy season.
The UORONI mask (a lush white suit with multi-colored splashes) symbolizes farming and fertility. The dance encourages residents to go to field works.
The CHAMPANZE mask (black monkey costume) symbolizes the peanut harvest. The dance is designed to rush the villagers to harvest ripe peanuts before it is devoured by chimpanzees.
Tomorrow the team will fly to the mysterious Timbuktu, on the very edge of the Sahara!

Мандинка составляют большинство в западной части страны, а также в пограничных районах соседних Сенегала, Гамбии, Гвинеи, Кот-д’Ивуара, Буркина-Фасо и Гвинеи-Бисау.
Ранее общество делилось на свободных (хорон) - земледельцев, воинов, охотников; членов ремесленных каст - кузнецов (нуму) и их жён-горшечниц, кожевенников (каранке), сказителей-гриотов (дьели), мусульманских сказителей (фина); несвободных (дьон). Однако сейчас кастовые различия, тайные союзы и другие древние институты постепенно исчезают.

Dear friends, we are sharing with you some photographs of the Mandinka (Malinke) people, whom our team met in the villages and markets of West Mali, near Sibi.
Mandinka form the majority in the western part of the country, as well as in the border areas of neighboring Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissau.
Previously, the society was divided into free people (khoron) - farmers, warriors, hunters; members of craft castes - blacksmiths (numu) and their wives-potters, tanners (karanke), griot storytellers (dyeli), Muslim storytellers (fina); slaves (dyon). However, now caste differences, secret alliances and other ancient institutions are gradually disappearing.
