Our big and friendly team explored Anadyr and it’s surroundings - a compact town with two traffic lights, multi-colored five-story buildings standing on stilts in the permafrost, with relaxing Chukchi fishermen on liman and beluga whales chasing salmon right by the passenger pier. The harsh northern nature and amazing fauna within arm’s reach right in Anadyr!
Right now we are flying to the extreme east of our great country, to the Gulf of Lawrence on the Chukotka Peninsula, and cross the date line, jumping from the Eastern hemisphere to the Western! It is there, where whales lash their tails, where reindeer herders roam the expanses of the polar tundra, where there is no Internet and other fuss of the big world! 🦌ЧУКОТСКИЕ ОЛЕНЕВОДЫ 🇷🇺
Наша экспедиция добралась по Берингову морю к оленеводам, стоящим в традиционных ярангах в районе поселения Янракыннот на полуострове Чукотка.
В трёх ярангах здесь размещается несколько семей традиционных оленеводов, пасущих трехтысячное оленье стадо. Мы переночевали в яранге и провели день в тундре, собирали грибы и ягоды (5 видов ягод нынче в тундре!), участвовали в традиционной повседневной жизни чукотских оленеводов и ритуальном забое оленя. Традиционная кухня, атмосфера яранги, которая топится по-чёрному, невероятно гостеприимные хозяева и инопланетной красоты место! Когда мы шли сюда по широкой бухте Гетляген, казалось: вот она, Земля Санникова!

🦌CHUKOT REINDEER HERDERS 🇷🇺
Our expedition reached reindeer herders across the Bering Sea, standing in traditional yarangas near the Yanrakynnot settlement on the Chukotka Peninsula.
There are several families of traditional reindeer herders living in three yarangas, grazing a herd of three thousand. We slept in yaranga and spent the day in tundra, picking mushrooms and berries (there are 5 types of berries are now in tundra!), we participated in traditional daily life of Chukchi reindeer herders and watched the ritual slaughter of a deer. Traditional cuisine, atmosphere of yaranga, incredibly hospitable hosts and a place of a cosmic beauty! When we walked here along the wide bay of Getlyagen, it seemed: here it is, Sannikov Land!

🐳 МЫС ДЕЖНЁВА: НА КРАЮ СВЕТА 🇷🇺
Экспедиция MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS достигла Мыса Дежнёва - крайней восточной точки России и всей Евразии. Семён Дежнёв, открывший в 17 веке пролив между Евразией и Америкой, не успел тогда опубликовать свои записки. Поэтому слава, а вместе с ней и название моря и пролива, достались Витусу Берингу, сделавшему это открытие лишь почти век спустя. Однако Дежнёву достался лишь мыс, названный в его честь.
Суровое море и штормовые волны в Беринговом проливе 🌊 не стали помехой для лодок Лоринских морзверобоев и их профессиональных капитанов, и мы вышли в Чукотское море - акваторию Северного Ледовитого океана.
Пейзажи мыса Дежнёва и расположенного здесь древнего эскимосского поседения Наукан не уступят знаменитому мысу Рока в Португалии, на западной оконечности материка, а по атмосфере его превосходят. Моржи на скалах, водопады, птичьи базары и киты, киты, киты...🐋

The harsh sea and storm waves in the Bering Strait 🌊 did not block the boats of the Lorino marine hunters and their professional captains, and we went to the Chukchi Sea - the water area of ​​the Arctic Ocean.
The landscapes of Cape Dezhnev and the ancient Eskimo settlement Naukan located here will not yield to the famous Cape Roca in Portugal, on the western end of the mainland, and even surpass it in its atmosphere. Walruses on the rocks, waterfalls, bird colonies and whales, whales, whales ... 🐋

🐋 ТРАДИЦИОННЫЕ ЧУКОТСКИЕ КИТОБОИ 🇷🇺

Чукчи традиционно делятся на тундровых (оленеводов) и прибрежных (морзверобоев). Некогда придя с юга на крайний северо-восток континента, чукчи смогли завоевать эту землю и фактически вытеснить все остальные племена. Это стало возможным благодаря тому, что чукчи переняли образ ведения хозяйства у эскимосских народов, и часть кочевников-оленеводов стали заниматься промыслом на морского зверя. Теперь чукчи могли вести внутренний обмен между оленеводами и морзверобоями и тем самым страховать свои риски, выручая друг друга в неудачные годы. Другие народы были лишены такой привилегии.
Сегодня Чукотка и ее коренные народы (чукчи и эскимосы) являются единственным регионом в России (и одним из немногих в мире), где существует разрешённая традиционная охота на кита. Международная Китобойная комиссия ежегодно выделяет Чукотке квоту в размере 120-140 серых китов и до 5 гренландских. Половину этой квоты выбирают китобои из Лорино.
Скудный рацион питания и сложные полярные условия обусловливают необходимость употребления в пищу мяса, жира и кожи кита и других морских животных. Отсутствие этих продуктов в рационе чукчей (как следствие, отсутствие важных витаминов) приводит к болезням, в частности, таким как цинга.

🐋 CHUKCHI WHALERS 🇷🇺

Chukchi are traditionally divided into tundra Chukchi (reindeer herders) and coastal Chukchi (sea mammals hunters). Having once come from the south to the extreme northeast of the continent, Chukchi have conquered this land and actually squeezed out all other tribes. This happened due to the fact that Chukchi adopted the way of farming from Eskimo peoples, and part of the nomadic reindeer herders began hunting sea mammals. Thus, Chukchi started conducting an internal exchange between reindeer herders and sea hunters and thereby hedge their risks, helping each other out in bad times. Other tribes were deprived of this privilege.
Today Chukotka and its indigenous peoples (Chukchi and Eskimo) is the only region in Russia (and one of the few in the world) where traditional whaling is permitted. The International Whaling Commission annually allocates a quota to Chukotka of 120-140 gray whales and up to 5 greenland whales. Half of this quota is taken by the whalers from Lorino.
Poor diet and harsh polar conditions necessitate the consumption of meat, fat and skin of whales and other sea mammals. The absence of these products in the diet of Chukchi (and, as a consequence, lack of important vitamins) leads to diseases, in particular, such as scurvy.

🐋 КИТОВЫЙ ПРОМЫСЕЛ ЧУКЧЕЙ 🇷🇺❗️БУДЬТЕ ТОЛЕРАНТНЫ: ТРАДИЦИОННАЯ КУЛЬТУРА ЧУКЧЕЙ❗️
Основу традиционного промысла морских зверобоев Чукотки составляют киты, прежде всего серые.
Охота на серого кита в Беринговом море возможна только в летний сезон, начиная с мая-июня и до начала октября.
Охота ведётся при помощи простых алюминиевых моторных лодок и механического поворотного гарпуна, который охотники метают вручную.
Охота на кита всегда командная. В Лорино, обладающего самой значимой на Чукотке флотилией в 8 лодок, зверобои стараются выходить максимальным составом. Хотя охотиться можно и с двух лодок.
Скорость серого кита не превышает 15 км/ч даже в испуганном состоянии. Скорость гренландского кита ещё ниже. Серый кит способен оставаться под водой до 10 минут, гренландский - до получаса. Задача гарпунёров - поставить первый гарпун с привязанным к нему буем (пыхпыхом). Это затрудняет ныряние кита и, кроме того, он будет лучше заметен при очередном появлении. После 10-20 загарпуниваний, обвешанный наконечниками гарпунов и поплавками, кит выматывается. Гуманное «усыпление» кита (как говорят чукчи) допустимо при помощи современным средств.
Важно вести кита в направление родной гавани, поскольку после «усыпления» время на его транспортировку ограничено. Вода наполняет лёгкие и кит может утонуть. Это непозволительная роскошь, поэтому зверобои работают в море быстро и эффективно.
Кит, доставленный к берегу, вытягивается из воды при помощи трактора.
Все село стекается к месту разделки туши, чтобы забрать свою порцию мяса и такого ценного жира с кожей (итильхен). Через час-два на берегу остаётся только хребет и плавники.

🐋 CHUKCHI WHALING PROCESS 🇷🇺

Whales, primarily gray, are the basis of the traditional fishing of marine hunters in Chukotka.
Hunting for gray whales in the Bering Sea is possible only during the summer season, from May-June to early October.
Hunting is conducted using simple aluminum motor boats and a mechanical swivel harpoon, which hunters throw by hand.

A whale brought to the shore is pulled out of the water using a tractor.
The whole village flocks to the carcass cutting site to pick up their portion of meat and such valuable fat with skin (itilhen). In an hour or two, only the ridge and fins remain on the shore.

В 50-е годы 20 века Советский Союз наладил промышленную добычу кита и уже добытые животные доставлялись кораблем на Чукотку для организации питания местного населения. Так, чукчи и эскимосы не вели традиционный морзверобойный промысел в течение 40 лет и утратили навыки. В 90-е, вместе с развалом Союза, завоз китового мяса прекратился и на Чукотке случился голод. Вячеслав Андреевич рассказал мне, что он был одним из тех, кто стоял у истоков возрождения традиционного морзверобойного промысла. Ему удалось вспомнить, что он наблюдал, будучи ещё ребёнком э, и передать знания молодому поколению. Сегодня лоринские китобои - пожалуй, самые искусные и эффективные в мире морские охотники. Алеуты и экскимосы Аляски проходили стажировку именно в Лорино.

Председатель Территориально-соседской общины Коренных малочисленных народов Чукотки «Лорино» рассказал мне о добыче гренландского кита, квота на которого у Чукотки всего 3 или 4 особи в год. Гренландца добывают только поздней весной или в конце октября, когда стоит холодная погода. Гренландского кита весом до 100 тонн (до 7 раз больше серого кита, основного промыслового вида чукчей) община разделывает двое суток, начиная процесс прямо в море. Летом мясо кита попросту «сгорело» бы за время разделки туши. Однако доставить добытого гренландца на берег - задача тоже не их легких. В мае, на ледяную кромку нельзя загонять трактор, поэтому 100-тонную тушу тащат «всем миром». Участвуют все: жители села, снегоходы, квадроциклы и даже собачьи упряжки.

In the 1950s, the Soviet Union established industrial whaling and already hunted whales were delivered by ship to Chukotka for catering the local population. The Chairman of the Territorial-neighboring community of Indigenous peoples of Chukotka "Lorino" told me about the hunting bowhead whales, quota for which is only 3 or 4 individuals per year in Chukotka. Bowhead whale is hunted only in late spring or late October, when the weather is cold. A bowhead whale weighing up to 100 tons (up to 7 times more than a gray whale, the staple for Chukchi), once hunted, is cut up by the community for two days, starting the process right in the sea. Наша вторая экспедиционная команда вернулась с Чукотки! Ребята дошли на катере до мыса Дежнёва, гостили в яранге у оленных чукчей и наблюдали за традиционным промыслом морских зверобоев - береговых чукчей.

Вторым по значимости для традиционного морзверобойного промысла чукчей и эскимосов является морж. Лорино добывает около половины чукотской квоты на моржа, около 300 особей в год. Наиболее известным моржовым продуктом является велькопальхен - ферментированное в мясной яме кислое мясо моржа (по-нашему несколько испорченное, с душком), которое чукчи широко заготавливают на зиму.

Охота на моржа ведётся также при помощи ручного гарпуна. Чукчи верят, что они не убивают моржа (или кита), а он «сам приходит к человеку и отдаёт себя». Поэтому добытое животное всегда встречают как дорого гостя. Our second expedition team has returned from Chukotka! The guys went by boat to Cape Dezhnev, stayed in yaranga with Chukchi reindeer herders and watched the coastal Chukchi traditional sea hunting.

The walrus is the second most important animal for traditional sea-animal hunting of Chukchi and Eskimos. Lorino hunts about half of the Chukchi walrus quota, about 300 individuals per year. The most famous walrus product is velkopalkhen - sour walrus meat fermented in a meat pit (as we see it, somewhat spoiled, with a smell), which Chukchi widely procure for winter.

Walrus is also hunted with a hand harpoon. Chukchi believe that they do not kill a walrus (or a whale), but he “comes to a person and gives himself up”. Therefore, the captured animal is always greeted as a dear guest. In honor of the whale, they arrange a holiday so that his soul leaves happy, and when it grows meat and skin again, the whale would return and bring its fellows with it.
