FTP/rsync Server 1 Availability Issue

We resolved an issue where users were unable to list or download content from FTP/rsync server 1.
Massive Speed Improvements

For a long time, hShop and Myrient were quite slow to access from outside of Europe, particularly in North America.

We at Erista not only have a desire to preserve as much video game content as possible but also give our users the fastest download speeds.

That is why after much maintenance and testing on our servers and network over the past few weeks, we have finally fixed the issues causing slow throughput. You should now be able to download content at faster speeds than before, no matter where you are in the world.

If you are still getting slow download speeds, please let us know.

Improvements to Myrient

- (Website) Content listings on the website now load faster than before.
- (Uploading Fixes) Added a file list showing fixes already uploaded by other users to prevent the uploading of duplicates.
Site Maintenance

Due to increasing traffic, we will be overhauling the content backend to improve performance and adding more 10 Gbps uplinks. Users may have issues accessing certain sets and encounter errors during this time. The web uploader is unaffected. We expect this maintenance to last a few days. Thank you for your understanding.

Resolved - Maintenance has concluded.
More Improvements to Myrient

We have listened to your feedback and made several more improvements to Myrient which improve speed and accessibility.

- (Website) (FTP) (rsync) Made content listings load faster than ever
- (Website) (FTP) (rsync) Added support for IPv6
- (FTP) (rsync) Fixed an issue where FTP and rsync servers were occasionally unstable
- (Website) Fixed an issue where direct downloads of high-demand content were limited by the bandwidth of the servers hosting it
- (Website) Fixed an issue where a small amount of direct downloads resulted in a network error mid-download
- (FTP) Fixed an issue where clients and/or users of ISPs that do not support FTP over TLS were not able to connect to the FTP endpoint

Please let us know what we should improve or change next by contacting us on the website.
Content Import

We are starting the next monthly import now. Over 450GB of content was uploaded and there are many files to process. As a result, the file drop will be disabled until this is completed. Your patience is appreciated.

Update - The monthly import has been completed, fixdats have been updated, and the web uploader is open again. Thank you to everyone who contributed fixes.
Myrient Blocked in Russia

Resolved
- This incident has been resolved.

Monitoring - We have implemented a fix. Myrient should be unblocked within an hour.

Identified - We have been informed that Myrient is blocked in Russia. We are working on a fix and hope to implement it before 31 December. Please use a VPN to bypass the block in the meantime. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas! We have some new developments to share regarding Myrient.

Introducing the Miscellaneous Collection

During 2022, many efforts were made to preserve not only video game content, but other forms of media as well, with the most notable being strategy guides and magazines uploaded to Internet Archive. Unfortunately, copyright notices caused them to be removed from public view.

If something is not publicly accessible, it is not preserved. Introducing the Miscellaneous collection — making the following content easily and publicly accessible again:

- Super Mario 64 Complete Guide Book
Uploaded to Internet Archive in March and removed from public view in response to a copyright notice by Nintendo.

- Grand Theft Auto VI Gameplay Videos
Uploaded to a file sharing service in September and removed in response to a copyright notice by Take-Two Interactive.

- Louvre 3DS NAND and SD Contents
Uploaded to Internet Archive in October and removed by the uploader.

- Nintendo Power Issues 1-285
Uploaded to Internet Archive in November and removed from public view in response to a copyright notice by Nintendo.

- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Prototype Build
Uploaded to Internet Archive in November and removed from public view in response to a copyright notice by Nintendo.

To inquire about or release other content to add to this collection, please use the email address on the Contact Us page of the site.

One Petabyte of Traffic!

In just over two months, Myrient has served more than one petabyte of content! I would like to thank @ everyone who helped make this possible, from recommending Myrient to others and uploading fixes to simply using the service.

Modified Import Schedule

We have changed the schedule for importing fixes from once per month to whenever there is time to do so. This will allow for missing content to be made available for download faster than before.
Happy New Year

Happy New Year! We will continue to improve Myrient and grow its content archive.

Addendum

In March, Nintendo will close Nintendo eShop for 3DS and Wii U, making tens of thousands of digital games, DLC, demos, free-to-play games, and other content no longer available to purchase or download.

When companies stop supporting their legacy hardware, services like Myrient and hShop become vital not only to users of modified systems, but everyone who uses that hardware. When the only other legal option is purchasing a game from a seller at a steep markup with all the profit going to the seller rather than the developer and publisher, users download a copy of it online. When companies like Nintendo put profit over its fans, we prevail.

This is not piracy. This is video game preservation.
High Site Traffic

Resolved
- This incident has been resolved.

Please note that we will never limit downloads in any way when we encounter performance issues; we will simply upgrade our infrastructure to meet the new demand.

Monitoring - We have implemented a fix and are monitoring the effects.

Identified - We have identified extremely high traffic to Myrient which has been causing download speeds to be slower than usual for the last 12 hours.
High Site Traffic - Update

Many of you may have noticed that download speeds were slower than usual and large content listings failed to load this past week due to the largest demand for content since Myrient's inception. Over the last few days, we have been working to deploy more servers and bandwidth to alleviate the performance issues with 100% of the upgrade costs paid out of pocket and 0% paid using advertisements, subscriptions, or other means of monetization. Thank you for your patience.

We are happy to announce that the deployment has been completed and the issues should be resolved. Myrient is now capable of serving 7 petabytes of content per month.
Network Connectivity Issues

Resolved
- This incident was resolved at 10:00 UTC.

Investigating - Our upstream is aware and investigating issues with routing.

Identified - We have identified network connectivity issues that may cause slow speeds and affect service reachability.
Fiber Cable Fault

Resolved
- The fiber cable has been repaired and Myrient is back to running at full capacity.

Identified - Yesterday, a fault occurred in the fiber cable that links Myrient's servers to the primary IX causing slow download speeds, packet loss, and intermittent loss of connectivity to all users worldwide.

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do except wait for the cable to be repaired. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Myrient Service Updates

Hello @ everyone! I would like to share with you recent updates to Myrient.

Faster Download Speeds

We have increased Myrient's bandwidth by another 10 Gbit/s, once again improving download speeds and directory loading times.

Myrient's total network capacity is now 30 Gbit/s, or 10 petabytes per month.

Traffic Statistics

Last 30 days: 4.93 PB
Since launch: 7.72 PB

That is 25 and 40 times the current size of all content on Myrient respectively!

A New Method to Upload Fixes

We have implemented the ability to upload fixes via FTP. This method replaces the web uploader, allowing users to upload massive amounts of fixes with less errors.

New Collections

TOSEC and its auxiliaries TOSEC-ISO and TOSEC-PIX have been added to Myrient and users can now contribute fixes for those collections.

Fundraising Campaign

Myrient has become a victim of its own success and we are no longer able to pay for the monthly operating costs in their entirety out of pocket. It is for this reason that we are now accepting donations to cover monthly expenses associated with serving content at such a large scale.

With bandwidth being the most expensive monthly operating cost, we would rather scale that down than monetize the website with advertisements. A decrease of bandwidth will noticeably impact download speeds and performance.

As a service that does not impose advertisements, download limits, or wait times on its users, Myrient uses a massive amount of bandwidth to serve over 5 petabytes of content per month. We continually increase bandwidth with demand whenever we financially can to keep download speeds high.

We do not make a profit from Myrient in any way and keeping it free of ads and limits is not possible without your support.

Current monthly operating costs and donation information can be found on the Donate page of the website or in the #donate channel in our Discord server.
Slow Download Speeds

Resolved
- This incident has been resolved.

Monitoring - We have found a probable root cause, implemented a fix, and are monitoring the results.

Update - The affected server went offline again. We will continue to investigate the issue.

Identified - Earlier today, users experienced slower download speeds than usual due to downtime on one of our servers, leading to a loss of capacity. The server is back online and download speeds should be back to normal. We apologize for the inconvenience.
New Content Backend

In the interest of increasing our bandwidth while keeping monthly costs at a reasonable amount, we will experiment with using a new content backend later this week. This will theoretically mean faster download speeds without a download manager, more efficient content management, and much larger collections being made available in the future.

We will implement the new backend on the website before switching all other aspects of Myrient to it as well, that is, the FTP and rsync servers if the test is a success. Thank you for your patience and continued support while we resolve any issues that may arise as a result.
Network Connectivity Issues

Resolved
- This incident has been resolved.

Monitoring - Our upstream has recovered and we are monitoring the results.

Identified - We have identified issues with network connectivity. Users may not be able to access Myrient during this time.
Modification Times Inconsistent Between Servers

Resolved
- This issue has been resolved and download speeds are back to normal.

Identified - We have identified an issue where the modification times of certain content is different between servers. This causes issues when using rsync and other tools to interact with Myrient's content.

Users may encounter slower download speeds than usual due to the resource contention associated with implementing an initial fix. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Network Connectivity Issues

Resolved - An error occurred during network maintenance at our upstream which caused all Erista services to become unreachable for a short time yesterday.

This incident has since been resolved.
Network Connectivity Issue

Resolved
- This incident has been resolved.

Monitoring - Due to a network issue at our upstream, users experienced slower download speeds than usual for a short time today. We are continuing to monitor for additional downtime.
Expired SSL Certificates

Resolved
- An error in our automation caused the site and FTP servers' SSL certificates to not renew correctly and we were not aware of this until they expired several hours ago. The certificates have been renewed and this issue has been resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience.
