In the 21st century, contact between many different parts of the world has developed rapidly through air travel and telecommunications.
What are the advantages and the disadvantages?
The world has become increasingly globalized thanks to improved air travel and telecommunication technologies. While this phenomenon has clear upsides, its possible downsides also need to be highlighted.
The benefits of increased global exchange aided by air travel and telecommunications are manifold, but the most commendable one is better intercultural understanding. Affordability of air travel has facilitated global tourism, which enabled exploration of different cultures irrespective of one’s location. For instance, an American now can take part in foreign festivities and rituals of Middle Easterners, try their food, capture photos and videos. Through this exchange, they gain deeper insights into Middle Easter cultures, which fosters cultural appreciation and tolerance. Globalization has also served as a catalyst to dynamic international trade: Countries today engage in commercial exchange with each other, exporting and importing good and services of all kinds. This can be seen in the example of the east primarily exporting agricultural products to the west through cheap airlines while the west lending intellectual properties like software to the east over the internet, which has not only resulted in our world becoming interconnected through trade, but it has also boosted global output.
While acknowledging the merits of globalization, it is essential to bear in mind some potential demerits of increased international contact. As well as nurturing cultural understanding, globalization has spelt doom to some minority cultures. This is a direct product of mainstream cultures propagating worldwide through tourism and the Internet, which compels minority groups to accept norms and traditions of those cultures. Just about every community now speaks English, listens to western music, watches Netflix, eats fast food and wears jeans, abandoning their own practices in favor of those of dominant cultures. This, ultimately, creates a homogeneous world devoid of diversity and sophistication. Growing international travel and exchange also prompted a rise in cost of living. This is because increased demand from foreigners caused a price hike in basic necessities like food, transportation, and accommodation, creating financial hardships for locals like high rent, exorbitant bills, and increased taxes. These new-found challenges have driven struggling families into unemployment and poverty, adding to a growing list of social problems.
In conclusion, indeed, increased international exchange with the help of air travel and telecommunications has conferred benefits in terms of heightened intercultural understanding and international trade, yet it brought with it issues like erosion of minority groups and a set of social problems like joblessness and poverty.
