Voluntary charity like feeding programs is beautiful and encouraged in Islam. Feeding people and caring for the needy are clearly praised in the Qur’an and Sunnah.
However, living in non-Muslim societies also means that daʿwah and explaining Islam should be a major priority. Many people around us have never properly heard the message of Islam.
The Prophet ﷺ himself taught us the principle of priorities. When he sent Muʿadh ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه to Yemen, he instructed him to first call the people to Tawheed, then to establish the prayer, and then to teach them about zakah (Bukhari & Muslim).
This shows that conveying the message of Islam must come first.
Voluntary charity remains a beautiful act, but it seems that in many places we invest huge effort in feeding programs while very little effort goes into conveying the message of Islam. Both are good, but our priorities should reflect the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ.
