#FarmUneasy: The compound effect of Bira’s crop losses over the span of 2 years has left him distraught.

“I have lost everything. Khaane ko bas roti aur mirch milegi iss saal (We will have to sustain ourselves on bread and Chillies this year),” Bira Singh told Moneycontrol.

We travelled to wheat growing districts of #Punjab & #Haryana to get a ground report of the brunt farmers faced due to the erratic weather patterns.

At 14, Chamkaur Singh, now 45, had inherited not just his father’s farmland but also the family debt. The debt, which had initially stood at Rs 25,000 about 15 years ago, has now ballooned to stand at Rs 8.9 lakh as he took out loan after loan to keep the farming going.

With the destruction of his crop due to unseasonal rains that lashed his land in the last week of March, payments look even more difficult this year.

My wheat crop this year has been destroyed due to rains. I have a loan of Rs 4 lakh from banks and Rs 5 lakh from Arhtiya. I will not be able to earn any money from the harvest this year, my input costs have not been met. We have faced heavy losses,” says farmer Chamkaur Singh (45)

When farmer Anita Sudkan (40), needed a loan overnight for her liver treatment, it was not a bank she approached but her Arhtiya (commission agent) who sent his aide almost 45 kms away with Rs 20,000 she needed, directly to a private hospital in district Kaithal. Seven years later, Anita continues to be in his debt.

Depleting groundwater tables and deteriorating soil quality have plagued the states of Haryana and Punjab for a long time. Farmers of the region have continued to struggle with low crop output due to poor soil fertility and erratic irrigation patterns.
