This week, we are happy to welcome Prof. Armin Beverungen with his lecture “Cultural Economy and Surveillance Capitalism”
The lecture will introduce a cultural economy perspective to highlight the contributions cultural studies can make to the study of economy, beyond debates around the „culturalization“ of the economy and the „economization“ of culture. It will then proceed to explore Shoshana Zuboff’s theses on surveillance capitalism and discuss how it can support cultural analyses of digital capitalism.

In this week's lecture, Ben Trott will provide an introduction to Marx’s thought and to his critique of political economy. It is open to all but primarily aimed at those with little prior knowledge of Marx. The lecture will set some of his ideas in the political, economic, social and intellectual context in which they emerged and introduce Marx’s materialist philosophy, his critique of idealism and his account of the relationship between what he famously called the economic base of society and the political and ideological superstructure.
What is Marx’s understanding of alienation in capitalist societies? What is his conception of communism? What is the difference between abstract and concrete labour? And how to make sense of the term ‘surplus value’? 🧐

Einladung zur pluralen Ringvorlesung: Feministische Ökonomik: Arbeit und Gender (Vorlesung 6)
Diese Woche dürfen wir Prof. Dr. Luise Görges und Dr. Corinna Dengler in unserer Ringvorlesung begrüßen, welche sich gemeinsam die Frage nach der Rolle von Geschlechternormen in Bezug auf Arbeitsteilung stellen werden.

Future of Economics: Ecological Limits to Growth
So far, we have reflected on past and present theories of economics. All MÖVEs were thrilled to welcome so many people to our lecture series. In case you haven't made it so far, don’t worry, because our next block starts NOW! 🎉
The third chapter "Economics for Future" will shed light on economic transformation dynamics. Therefore we invited highly impressive speakers, starting with Prof. Dr. David Abson, an ecological economist at Leuphana. His lecture will briefly discuss historic understandings of the limits to - or undesirability of - infinite economic growth on a finite planet (from John Stuart Mill to Marx). 🌍
Then, taking a largely ecological economics perspective, we will discuss the metabolism of the economy, the economy as a subsystem of the environment, biophysical limits to growth, and sustainable economic scales. 🌱
Having established the problems of economic growth, we will explore why we continue to “shovel fuel into the runaway train” and touch on some key alternatives to our current growth paradigm.

Als Auftaktveranstaltung des vierten Blocks “Who runs the world?” begrüßen wir Prof. Dr. Aaron Sahr, Wirtschaftssoziologe und Leiter der Forschungsgruppe “Monetäre Souveränität” am Hamburger Institut für Sozialforschung.
Sein Vortrag wird sich (1) mit den ideologischen Ursachen, (2) den gesellschaftlichen Folgen und (3) der ambivalenten Kritik an der Entpolitisierung von Geld und Geldschöpfung beschäftigen. Traditionell wird in akademischen Journalen, Polit-Talkshows und Meinungsbeiträgen darüber gestritten, wie Geld am besten verteilt werden sollte, doch kommt die Produktion des Geldes durch die Zentralbanken kaum zur Sprache. Entscheidende Machtfragen - wie viel Geld es gibt und für wen, d.h. zu welchem Zweck es ursprünglich geschaffen wird - wurden entpolitisiert. Nicht zuletzt durch die Coronakrise, in der gewaltige Summen aus dem Nichts erschaffen wurden, platzierte sich dieses Thema wieder im politischen Diskurs. 🏦

MÖVE LAST LECTURE: Modern Monetary Theory - Introduction of the New Paradigm
On Thursday, our lecture series "Economics and beyond" will sadly come to an end - but it will once again be really interesting!
We will talk about Modern Monetary Theory, a rather new movement in economics, which strongly influences the academic discourse on fiscal deficits especially in the USA.
We will have one of the best-known German experts, Dr. Dirk Ehnts, who will introduce us to MMT. Afterward, we will - as always - have a final discussion.
As we want to get a little feedback as well, we are closing our lecture series with a look back on the past three months and on what we have learned.

On Thursday, our lecture series "Economics and beyond" will sadly come to an end - but it will once again be really interesting!
We will talk about Modern Monetary Theory, a rather new movement in economics, which strongly influences the academic discourse on fiscal deficits especially in the USA.
We will have one of the best-known German experts, Dr. Dirk Ehnts, who will introduce us to MMT. Afterward, we will - as always - have a final discussion.
As we want to get a little feedback as well, we are closing our lecture series with a look back on the past three months and on what we have learned.
