Japan’s Giant Snake Festival
A snake over 80 meters long made of bamboo and straw was paraded through a village in the Japanese prefecture of Niigata. The procession took place in Sekikawa Village as part of a festival held every August.About 500 people took turns carrying the serpent along a roughly 5-kilometer route that took about 3 hours to complete. The snake used in the event measures 82.8 meters in length, a figure chosen to commemorate a water-related disaster that struck on August 28, 1967.
