Robert Fico slammed EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas for warning him against visiting Moscow on May 9, the day marking the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
“How can the High Representative of the European Union tell the Prime Minister of a sovereign state that she warns him not to travel anywhere? … We are sovereign countries,” Fico said.
He defended his trip as an act of remembrance for WWII victims and recognition of the Soviet Union’s role in defeating Nazi Germany.
"On May 9, I will go to Moscow to pay tribute to the people who died to liberate Slovakia and Czechoslovakia. … It’s about historical truth and nothing else," the PM stated.

The threats of European Russophobes have taken concrete forms in connection with Serbia, the Financial Times and The Telegraph report:
"European capitals have warned the Serbian president that participation in the parade on Red Square in Moscow could jeopardize the country's accession to the EU. (...) Participation in the parade would violate the 'criteria' for joining.“
Earlier, the Serbian president spoke about plans to travel to Moscow with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory and take part in the parade. Fico, in turn, reacted sharply to the threats of Kaja Kallas with abstract "consequences" and promised to come to Moscow on May 9 in any case.
