Meridian Play & Ocean Entertainment Group (OEG) – Vietnam Domestic Gaming Industry Report

Meridian Play and OEG have collaborated on this report to provide an overview of Vietnam’s domestic gaming market. The report highlights Vietnam's local market landscape, as well as the opportunities and challenges for foreign companies looking to enter the market.

The market size reached $825 million by the end of 2025. This represents 9.16% growth year-over-year.

Vietnamese has 54+ million gamers, the majority of whom are mobile players.

By the end of 2025, games developed by Vietnamese mobile studios had reached 4.9 billion downloads, ranking second globally after China.

Payment methods in Vietnam are highly diversified. Electronic payments account for 31% of transactions, cards for 27%, and bank transfers for 21%, including the local NAPAS network.

The key publishers in the local market are VNG Games, Funtap, VTC, Garena, Gamota, and OEG.

Vietnam has 79.8 million internet users, with internet penetration reaching 78.8% of the population (+0.3% YoY). There is still room for further growth.

MMORPGs, team battle games, and 4X strategy titles were the top-performing game subgenres by revenue in Vietnam in 2025.

Vietnam’s gaming market is tightly regulated, requiring foreign developers to work with a local entity or licensed publisher. The G1–G4 license types are also outlined.

At the end of the report, we also covered solutions related to the new policies and the process of obtaining a copyright certificate, helping companies entering the Vietnamese market better understand local laws and regulations.

China’s April 2026 Game License Approvals

On April 29, 2026, China’s National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) officially released the April game license approval results. A total of 147 domestic games and 7 imported games received approval.

📌 Key Highlights:

- On the game platform breakdown, multi-platform releases remained limited, with only 10 titles across mobile and PC, and just 1 title covering mobile, PC, and PS5. Mobile games continued to dominate, accounting for 90 titles.

- In terms of genre distribution, 45 titles were classified as “mobile casual/puzzle” games.

- The approved imported titles include Xuan-Yuan Sword IP (轩辕剑之上古神器), Ragnarok IP (仙境传说:诸神战场), Besiege (围攻), Brotato (土豆兄弟), ARC Raiders (弧光猎人), Monopoly IP (大富翁:全球首富), and Big Helmet Heroes (大头盔英雄).

- ARC Raiders, the 2025 TGA Best Multiplayer Game winner developed by Embark Studios (a Nexon subsidiary), has secured Tencent as its exclusive publisher in mainland China.

- NetEase’s Joker Studio-developed open-world RPG Sea of Remnants (遗忘之海) is also a key highlight, having generated strong player discussion since its reveal and entering early testing this year. It is planned for mobile, PC, and PS5, targeting a Q3 2026 launch.

As of April 2026, 621 games have been approved year-to-date, including 600 domestic and 21 imported titles, up ~22.49% YoY from 507 in the same period of 2025.

Tencent Q1 2026 Financial Results

In May 2026, Tencent released its unaudited Q1 2026 financial results. Total revenue reached RMB 196.5B ($28.9B), up 9% year-over-year, while gross profit rose 11% to RMB 111.3B ($16.4B).

📌 Key Highlights:

- Domestic gaming revenue rose 6% year-over-year to RMB 45.4 billion ($6.3 billion). Growth trailed domestic game gross receipts due to delayed revenue recognition following the later 2026 Chinese New Year holiday.

- Domestic game gross receipts grew by double digits year-over-year, driven by evergreen titles such as Honor of Kings (王者荣耀) and Peacekeeper Elite (和平精英), as well as newer releases including Delta Force (三角洲行动) and VALORANT Mobile (无畏契约:源能行动).

- International Games revenues were RMB18.8 billion, up 13% YoY (14% on a constant-currency basis), primarily driven by higher revenues from Clash Royale, Wuthering Waves and VALORANT PC.

- Beyond evergreen titles, the newly launched game Rock Kingdom: World (洛克王国:世界) also gained strong popularity, with average DAU surpassing 13 million in its first month after launching in late March.

Tencent will continue expanding AI adoption across its businesses. In gaming, AI is already used in 3D asset generation, graphics optimization, and NPC interaction. NPC battles in Rock Kingdom: World (洛克王国:世界) are mainly powered by reinforcement learning AI.

Square Enix Financial Results for FY2026

Square Enix Holdings released its FY2026 financial results in May (fiscal year covering April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026), reporting net sales of ¥297.6 billion (≈ $1.8 billion, down 8.3% YoY) and operating income of ¥54.7 billion (≈ $0.345 billion, up 34.9% YoY).

NetEase Continues Restructuring Overseas Studios

On May 20, NetEase-owned studio Quantic Dream announced that Spellcasters Chronicles will be shut down and delisted, alongside internal restructuring and a new round of layoffs. This marks the second major adjustment to NetEase’s overseas studios this year, as the company continues reshaping its international operations in recent years.

📌 Key Highlights:

- In November 2024, Canada-based studio Worlds Untold was shut down. The studio was founded in 2023.

- In December 2024, Japan-based Ouka Studios was fully closed. The studio had previously collaborated with Square Enix on the development of Visions of Mana. It was founded in 2020.

- In early 2025, US-based Jar of Sparks stopped development on its project and began seeking a new publishing partner. It was founded in 2022.

- In August 2025, NetEase shut down T-Minus Zero Entertainment, a game studio founded in 2023 by BioWare alumni Rich Vogel.

- In November 2025, Fantastic Pixel Castle was closed. The studio, founded in 2023, had primarily been developing an MMORPG codenamed "Ghost."

- Nagoshi Studio, founded in 2022, had its funding withdrawn by NetEase in May this year, and its official website has recently been taken offline.

- Spellcasters Chronicles will be shut down and delisted. From its launch in late February to its closure on June 19, the game lasted only four months.

Over the past four years, NetEase has set up more than ten overseas studios, but only a few remain active today. On May 21, the company reported Q1 2026 game and related value-added service revenue of RMB 25.7 billion (≈ $3.56 billion). With its domestic and overseas game operations evolving at different paces, the company’s global game strategy may be entering a period of adjustment and refocus.
