Executive Bases and Evaluation Criteria:

The founder and director of Mehregan Prize believes that the main responsibility of the organisers of independent book prizes is to enable unbiased and fair framework and process for evaluating the literary and scientific work. In Alireza Zargar’s opinion, the most important qualities for a Mehregan Prize judge are knowledge and experience, courage of expressing one’s opinion, independent and free will, and avoidance of biases.

Mehregan Prize’s Jury:

One of the most important criteria of Mehregan Prize which has been the main cause of its endurance and continuation, are its members of the jury. They are the Jury members who, in the light of their knowledge and specializations, judge and assess the works and play a valuable role in preserving and developing the objectives of the Mehregan Prize. Some of these members in different rounds of the prize have shared their invaluable services with Mehregan Prize voluntarily and without any financial benefit.

According to the arranged schedule of the secretariat, the final ceremony was to be held in October 2022, but due to the acrimonious and sorrowful circumstances, whose description was rendered in the statement of the director and 24 members of the Jury on 11th of Mehr (October), was postponed to some other occasion.

The Mehregan Prize Selected Winner for “A Life-time Attempt in Writing”:

According to Mehregan Prize agenda in “A Life-time Attempt in Writing”, election of a writer for the collection of his/her composed works requires the unanimous consensus of the jury members; if no such consensus, there will be no award given. It is worth mentioning that this requirement is not necessary in other sections, but what counts, are the highest votes attained by the writers’ works.

Selected Winners of Mehregan Prize of Literature in Various Sections

Mehregan Prize Selected Winners of Literature in the Section of Mother Tongue (Novel and Short Story Collections):

Mehregan Prize, in October 2018 coincidental with the twentieth course of Mehregan Persian Literature, added one more section concerned with the mother tongue: Mehregan Prize for mother tongue works, which are initially published in non-Farsi (the writer’s mother tongue) and then translated into Persian, was held.
This Award, with respect for mother-language-speakers in the vast culture of Iran territory, was founded and is granted with the objective of introduction and appreciation of the effort of those authors who compose in their mother tongue and thus serve to preserve it. It also involves
• The best novel
• The best short story collection
• A life-time attempt in writing with regard to the body of the writer’s works

The First Course | 2018:
The best novel: Akharin Roozhaye Zendegi-e Halaleh (in Kurdish), Ata Nahaei, translated by Reza Karim Mojaver
The praised novel: Parandehha Digar Nemitarsand (in Azarbayejani Turkish language), Rogayyeh Kabiri; translated by Late Hamzeh Farahati
In this course, short story collection had no winner.

The Second and Third Courses | 2019-2020:
The evaluation of the works finished in winter 2021 and according to the previously designed schedule, the final ceremony of prize giving was supposed to take place in October 2021, but to the critical and catastrophic social circumstances in Iran, it was postponed to an appropriate occasion in the future. Four novels and a short story collection have got to the final stage and have been announced.

The Fourth and Fifth Courses | 2021-2022:
The primary actions have started and already done and the process is still in progress and continued.

Selected Winners of Mehregan Prize of Literature in Various Sections

Mehregan Prize Selected Winners of Literature Overseas:

Coincidental with Mehregan Prize twentieth course, the prize for literary works of literature in Persian outside Iran or overseas was added. The call for evaluating the first-print works of 2017 and 2018 was announced. 126 novels and short story collections were received by the secretariat office and their evaluation or assessment started by 5 literary critic and writers inhabiting abroad. Prior to the announcement of the names of the winners and final ceremony, the continuation and celebration ceremony was banned and ceased. The prize-giving process is also postponed to the next occasion and next notice.

Mehregan Prize for literature outside Iran consists of the following sections too:
“the best novel”
• Mehregan prize of literature abroad for “the best short story collection”
• Mehregan prize of literature abroad for “A life-time attempt in Writing”
• Golden Literary Mehregan Prize:

Golden Literary Mehregan Prize for the best novel or best short story collection from one decade of Mehregan Prize is also held. The first decade of this prize coincided with 2009 tragic events in Iran and the celebration of this ceremony was almost impossible. Thus, at the end of second decade of Mehregan Prize (2020), consideration of 41 selected and praised novels in the first twenty years took place (first and second decades) and in one occasion were commonly held.
Seven Jury members including Goli Emami, Parvin Salajegheh, Mehdi Ghabraei, Mozhdeh Daghighi, Farzan Sojoudi, and Late Sorayya Ghezel Ayagh were in charge of evaluation and judgment of the novel for Golden literary prize. The whole process of assessment ended in April of 2021 and ten finalist novels of the prize were determined. But due to the Covid 19 epidemic and the subsequent restraints, the ceremony was also deferred to some other occasion to dedicate the prize to the winner of the selected novel.

Mehregan Prize Winners of Science

The Mehregan Prize for science was granted to the best ecological-scientific work on October 2000. In later years, two other sections were added; Mehregan Prize for science for “A life-time attempt in the field of Ecology” is usually granted to the most active writer or influential and prominent activitist in the field of Ecology; Mehregan Prize of Science is given to the “most superior NGO” in Iran. The objective of this prize is to encourage Iranian NGO’s to promote their educational and distributive activities to attract corporation of local communities and contribute to formation of more advanced NGO’s.

The selected book: Rahnamay-e Sahraei-e Pestandaran-e Iran (new edition and revision), Engineer Hooshang Ziaei. Hooshang Ziaei was also praised for his years of decades of services and researches in the fields of Iran’s Wilderness.

The selected book: In these years due to the limitations of book titles in the field of ecology and with the recognition of the board of the Jury, this prize was not presented. Mehregan Prize for science have resumed biannually since 2011.

The Eighth and Nineth Courses | 2011-2012 (biannual):
The selected book: Considering all the published first-print books, The Jury found none of the edited or translated works deserving Mehregan Prize in these years.
With regard to previous experience and this course of Mehregan Prize which signified the limitation of the book titles and low quality of the published books, Mehregan Prize secretariat, for the continuation and development of books as such, proposed, that along with election of the best scientific book, there would be the election of the most outstanding ecological figures and NGO’s, in respect with the impact of their efforts in preserving eco-system. This proposal was endorsed by the board of the Jury and is to be executed ever since and awards will be granted in these two respects too.

The evaluation process of these courses has terminated in spring of 2022 and the list of pre-final nominees in the best selected books, a life-time Attempt in the field of Ecology and the best NGO’s have been announced.
According to the pre-determined schedule, the final ceremony was supposed to be held in October 2022, but due to the present gloomy and bitter social circumstances, whose description was rendered, in October 2022, in the statement of the director and 24 members of the Jury, it was postponed to another occasion.

The Eighteenth and Nineteenth Courses | 2021-2022 (biannual):
The first-print books, the characters’ activities and NGO’s in the field of Iranian Ecology in 2021 and 2022 are being considered by the Jury board of Mehregan Prize of Science.

Mehregan Prize Call for Novels and Short Story Collections
Twenty third and Twenty Fourth Courses
Novel and Collection of Short Stories

The secretariat office of Mehregan Prize, announcing its call for twenty third and fourth courses of Mehregan Literary Prize for selecting the best novels and short story collections, invites reverent publishers and authors to send their works to this office; the deadline is 20th of June 2024.
Publishers and authors can participate in this event by sending three copies of each title of the novels or short story collections which have been printed in years 2021 and 2022 for the first time. Moreover, publishers and writers whose works were printed during January the first of 2021 up to December, 31st 2023 outside Iran, can send the electronic PDF files of their works or mail three copies of the printed works up to June 20th, 2024 in order to attend these new courses of Mehregan award.
Furthermore, the secretariat office of Mehregan Prize notifies mother tongue speakers in Iranian cultural and geographic spheres that the agenda of "Mehregan Literary Prize of Mother Tongue" is subject to change and thus the call for the related works is delayed and will be announced subsequently.

18th and 19th Courses
Selection of the best scientific-ecological Book, Supreme Ecological NGOs,
and the Most Influential Figure in Ecology Sphere of Iran

Mehregan Prize secretariat office, announcing the 18th and 19th courses of Mehregan Prize of Science, invites the publishers and authors of scientific-ecological books, whose first-print books were published in 2021 and 2022, to send three copies of their books to the secretariat office up to 20th of April. In the section of NGOs. Mehregan Prize secretariat office invites the director or the founding members of NGO to render a brief biography and a list of their most significant activities and contributions in the years 2021, 2022. They are also required to attach a brief video account of their achievements (a clip) in these two years. It is also noteworthy that written description of the activities should be at most 500 words and the video report should be limited to at most 4 minutes. The deadline for the reception of the documents is 20th of April 2024.
Besides, Mehregan Prize secretariat invites the independent and active organs that if they know a figure qualified for "A life-time struggle" of Mehregan Prize, introduce him/her to this office; the biography and list of the most important works or accomplishments of the person should be included. The deadline for presenting such nominees is December 20th, 2024.
