#Caring for Others Cares for the Self: An Experimental Test of Brief Downward Social Comparison, Loving-Kindness, and Interconnectedness Contemplations

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10902-019-00100-2

Those who wished others well (loving-kindness) had lower #anxiety, greater happiness, greater empathy, and higher feelings of caring and connectedness than those in a control condition. The Interconnectedness condition resulted only in beneficial effects on social connection. Although social comparison theory suggests that downward social comparison should improve mood, this study found that it had no beneficial effects relative to the control condition and was significantly worse than the loving-kindness condition.

This brief loving-kindness contemplation worked equally well across several measured individual differences, and is a simple intervention that can be used to reduce anxiety, increase happiness, empathy, and feelings of social connection.

Association of Obstructive Sleep #Apnea With the Risk of Affective Disorders

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaotolaryngology/article-abstract/2749521

..In a subgroup analysis, the adjusted HRs for patients with OSA who developed #depressive and #anxiety disorders were 2.90 (95% CI, 1.98–4.24) and 1.75 (95% CI, 1.26–2.44), respectively. Moreover, female patients with OSA had a significant likelihood of prospective development of depression and anxiety (adjusted HR for depression, 3.97 [95% CI, 1.54-10.19]; adjusted HR for anxiety, 2.42 [95% CI, 1.17-5.02]) compared with male patients with OSA (adjusted HR for depression, 2.74 [95% CI, 1.80-4.17]; adjusted HR for anxiety, 1.64 [95% CI, 1.13-2.39]).

Conclusions and Relevance This observational study using nationwide data suggests that OSA is associated with an increased incidence of affective disorder, such as depression and anxiety. Further studies appear to be needed to confirm our findings and, if validated, then studies are needed to explore the nature of the observed association, including potential causality, between OSA and affective symptoms.

Association of #Depression, #Anxiety, and Trauma With #Cannabis Use During Pregnancy

..Depression, anxiety, and trauma diagnoses and symptoms were associated with higher odds of cannabis use among pregnant women in California. These results support previous qualitative findings that pregnant women self-report using cannabis to manage mood and stress and suggest a dose-response association, with higher odds of cannabis use associated with co-occurring depressive and anxiety disorders and greater depression severity. However, research is needed to determine the direction of these associations, because cannabis use might also cause or worsen mental health problems during pregnancy

..The health risks of prenatal cannabis use to the fetus are complex and may vary with administration mode and frequency of use; however, no amount of cannabis use during pregnancy has been shown to be safe. Pregnant women should be screened for cannabis use, asked about their reasons for use, educated about potential risks, and advised to quit. Furthermore, early screening for prenatal depression, anxiety, and trauma, and linkage to appropriate interventions might mitigate the risk of prenatal cannabis use..

#Acne vulgaris and risk of #depression and #anxiety: A meta-analytic review
https://2medical.news/2020/06/21/acne-vulgaris-and-risk-of-depression-and-anxiety-a-meta-analytic-review/

Several studies have shown an association of acne vulgaris with depression and anxiety, but a quantitative review has not yet been conducted.. Forty-two studies were included. We found a significant association of acne vulgaris with depression ( r = 0.22 [95% confidence interval 0.17-0.26, P < .00001]) and anxiety ( r = 0.25 [95% confidence interval 0.19-0.31, P < .00001]). Subgroup analyses and comparisons showed …
Food & mood: a review of supplementary #prebiotic and #probiotic interventions in the treatment of #anxiety and #depression in adult
https://2medical.news/2020/07/16/food-mood-a-review-of-supplementary-prebiotic-and-probiotic-interventions-in-the-treatment-of-anxiety-and-depression-in-adult/

A bidirectional relationship exists between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract. Foods containing bacteria that positively influence the gastrointestinal microbiome are termed, probiotics; compounds that promote the flourishing of these bacteria are termed, prebiotics. Whether microbiome influencing therapies could treat psychiatric conditions, including depression and anxiety, is an area of interest. Presently, no established consensus for such treatment exists.. .. 7 studies were identified. All …
Increased rates of #eating disorders and their symptoms in women with major #depressive disorder and #anxiety disorders
https://2medical.news/2020/09/03/increased-rates-of-eating-disorders-and-their-symptoms-in-women-with-major-depressive-disorder-and-anxiety-disorders/

Individuals with eating disorders (EDs) have increased rates of major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorders. Yet, few studies have investigated rates of EDs and their symptoms in individuals presenting with MDD/anxiety disorders. Identifying potential disordered eating in people with MDD/anxiety disorders is important because even subclinical disordered eating is associated with reduced quality of life, and undiagnosed eating pathology may hinder treatment progress for …
#Meningeal γδ T cells regulate #anxiety-like behavior via IL-17a signaling in neurons
https://2medical.news/2020/09/27/meningeal-%CE%B3%CE%B4-t-cells-regulate-anxiety-like-behavior-via-il-17a-signaling-in-neurons/

Interleukin (IL)-17a has been highly conserved during evolution of the vertebrate immune system and widely studied in contexts of infection and autoimmunity. Studies suggest that IL-17a promotes behavioral changes in experimental models of autism and aggregation behavior in worms. Here, through a cellular and molecular characterization of meningeal γδ17 T cells, we defined the nearest central nervous system–associated source of IL-17a under homeostasis. Meningeal γδ …
Relationship Among Sensory Over-Responsivity, Problem Behaviors, and #Anxiety in Emerging Adults with #Autism Spectrum Disorder
https://2medical.news/2020/09/30/relationship-among-sensory-over-responsivity-problem-behaviors-and-anxiety-in-emerging-adults-with-autism-spectrum-disorder/

Despite the highly prevailing rate of sensory over-responsivity, problem behaviors, and anxiety among emerging adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), little is known about the nature of their experiences. While previous studies have indicated potential relationships among these conditions, their connections still need to be clarified. This study aimed to examine the relationships between sensory over-responsivity, problem behaviors, and anxiety.. .. The percentage of emerging …
Associations Between Social #Anxiety, #Depression, and Use of #Mobile Dating Applications
https://2medical.news/2020/11/14/associations-between-social-anxiety-depression-and-use-of-mobile-dating-applications/

This study explores associations between symptoms of social anxiety (SA) and depression with participants’ extent of dating app use, self-reported motivations for dating app use, and likelihood of initiating interaction with dating app matches. Three-hundred seventy-four participants completed an online battery of surveys that examined psychopathology and dating app use. SA and depression symptoms were positively associated with participants’ extent of dating app use, and …
Common and specific aspects of #anxiety and #depression and the #metabolic syndrome
https://2medical.news/2021/03/06/common-and-specific-aspects-of-anxiety-and-depression-and-the-metabolic-syndrome/

The associations of anxiety and depression with metabolic syndrome (MetS) are not consistent across studies. Anxiety and depression are highly correlated and traditional methods don’t take the structure of this correlation into account. Our aim is to disentangle the relationship of these emotional conditions with MetS, using bifactor models, modelling both general and specific aspects between anxiety and depression. Methods Bifactor models were tested using …
