Hi everyone,
I want to share a safety warning with other fincas and hosts in the region.
We recently received a message from a volunteer who was supposed to arrive. Shortly before the arrival date, the person claimed a sudden family tragedy and asked us to take responsibility for their van and their dog because they “needed to leave the country urgently.”
This type of story matches a known scam pattern on several volunteer platforms (HelpStay, Workaway, Worldpackers, etc.):
Emotional emergency story
Request to store or care for a vehicle or animal
Followed later by requests for money, transport fees, “drivers,” or other obligations
Legal risk for the host regarding the vehicle, insurance, or the animal
Even if photos or documents are provided, this does not confirm the story.
For safety reasons we declined and blocked communication.
Please stay alert and do not take responsibility for vehicles, animals, or belongings from unknown volunteers.
If something feels wrong, trust your intuition and protect your project, your time, and your community.
