80% of CBE’s Transactions Are Now Digital

Ethiopia’s state-owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia CBE) has made strides in digital banking services, with digital channels handling 80% of its transactions during the first quarter.

The USD/ETB rate stands at 149.7445 Br, reflecting a slight -0.13% change from the previous close of 149.2017 Br. Today's trading range has been between 146.46 Br and 159.89 Br, showing the market's volatility as it navigates the ongoing supply and demand imbalance.

Currently, the largest demand is concentrated at 145–143 Br, where buyers are seeking USD in significant volumes—over 48,000 USD at 145 Br and 59,000 USD at 143 Br. However, supply at these levels remains scarce, creating upward pressure on prices. The market supply is strongest at 148 Br, where over 12,000 USD is available, but supply above this level drops sharply, with only 5,316 USD available at 149 Br and even less at higher rates.

This dynamic shows that while buyers are pushing hard to secure USD at lower prices, the lack of availability at those levels is forcing them to look higher. Sellers appear to be holding onto their dollars, cautiously releasing supply in smaller volumes, which is limiting downward movement in the rate and sustaining the market just below the 150 Br mark.
