What if a single mouthful could hand you back your entire childhood?
In a grey Paris winter, a tired man comes home cold and discouraged, and his housekeeper brings him tea and a few small cakes. He is expecting nothing. He dips a piece of cake into the tea, lifts the softened crumb to his lips —
And then nothing dramatic. Just a shiver. A small, exquisite shock running through him like a chord struck somewhere far off in a dark house. He has no idea what it is. He knows only that the taste has opened a door he had forgotten was there.
He waits. He takes another mouthful. And the door swings wide: a garden — a whole garden — and a village, and his aunt's house, and the lilacs, and the hawthorn, and every single morning of a summer he thought he had lost.
It will fade. It always fades. But for a few minutes he is standing in the middle of his own childhood, and the years have simply not happened.
Past is hidden inside tastes and smells and textures, waiting to be found.
