An activity we call "surprise colours" is a favourite around here.

What colour is in the flour? You have to mix it with water to find out.

This builds kids' relationships with colour on their own terms, through discovery. So much more powerful for their learning than by having existing colours in pots.

... This is a fact I learned after telling it to a Waldorf educator.
Mt Barker District Council is closing its (70-year-old) outdoor pool because they have a new aquatic centre. That's about the dumbest decision ever. Communities value both but for different reasons... esp when their populations explode.

Took kiddo to the Army Museum today. He was amazed by the tanks, guns, weapons... And esp the trench warfare. He loved the bugles and the medicos. But the thing he was MOST surprised about? Horses. Yup, the Light Horsemen.

Coolest was the Tommy gun that you can make work for the feel (rather than the shooting).

Then I got, "Mum, when I'm in the Army..."

Loving the enthusiasm. Not real keen on my only son being a soldier, even if he is incredible leadership material. ๐Ÿ˜…
Never buy bubble mix or bubble toys again!

From Dr Hubble's Bubbles.

Dr Hubble uses different mixtures for different tricks but here is a recipe that will work well for kids at home and at school.

4 litres of warm water

1 cup of Fairy dishwashing liquid โ€“ or purple Palmolive if you canโ€™t find Fairy

2 tablespoons of glycerin

2 tablespoons of baking powder ( this balances the ph of the mix, its not necessary when your water is fairly pure, Melbourne water is Ok)

Optional- 1/4 teaspoon guar gum ( this will help bigger bubbles to hold together)

Mix the guar and glycerin first, then add detergent then water let it sit over night and youโ€™ll be right to make some beautiful bubbles of your own.

Bubble toys:
a pipecleaner attached to a chopstick
Boots (bubble mix on the foot hole, poke a hole in the toe and blow!)
old badminton raquets with the strings taken out
pieces of pipe - from vacuum cleaner pipes (wash them first!) to bits of poly pipe
Started teaching 4yo kiddo mnemonics. He already knows mnemonics for digits 0-9. He thinks stories to remember numbers are hilarious!

Next: The Major System. I think that's going to be more of a challenge. ๐Ÿคฃ
This week I had to draw a hard boundary for a client about finance. She was in debt to me, has no money, asked me to clear it if we just consider XYZ.

My answer was No.

I can't in good conscience enable a negative behaviour pattern, esp as a coach when I absolutely must role model good behaviours. (And help others while I do it!)

I hate having to tell people that overdue monies attracts interest. I really dislike having to be The Bad Guy and demand payment.

But you know something? You can do it without being an ass.

If your clients have to borrow money, make them aware of 0% interest, 0-fee loans.

If they owe you money, be considerate to a point.

It is not noble to go hungry. It is not noble to give in because of a sad story.

What IS noble is looking after all parties in the transaction as well as you can. Sometimes it takes a bit of thought and effort.

But here's the thing: The effort is always worthwhile.

I've started writing therapeutic stories. If you want one, let me know.

Therapeutic stories address challenging behaviours, thoughts, situations and emotions.
I came up with a therapeutic story about the smoke detector for my little guy. He was terrified of them! Their little red lights freaked him out. He was terrified they were watching him.

The story brought the smoke detector to life. It was lonely. And it made a little light to say helloooo to people who walked past it all day. The little boy in the story made friends with it so it wasn't lonely any more.

Today, Darling Son woke up and randomly said, "I'm not scared of the smoke detector anymore mum."

Bam. Mission accomplished. โค๏ธ
