### 1. Nadelen van meer zuurstof in de lucht

- Brandgevaar neemt sterk toe: bij een zuurstofgehalte boven de normale 20,9% (bijvoorbeeld rond 24%) branden materialen veel gemakkelijker en vlammen hoger en heviger op.[1]
- Materiaal kan spontaan ontbranden: olie, vet en sommige kunststoffen kunnen in zuurstofrijke omgevingen spontaan vlam vatten of explosief reageren.[1]

### 2. Effect op ons lichaam: meer oxidatie

Ja, bij hogere zuurstofconcentraties of –drukken neemt de oxidatie in het lichaam toe, omdat zuurstofmechanismen dan meer vrije radicalen (zoals superoxide‑ en hydroxylradicalen) produceren.[5][6][8]
- Deze vrije radicalen kunnen schade toebrengen aan vetten, eiwitten en DNA in cellen, wat oxidatieve stress heet en bijdraagt aan veroudering en bepaalde ziekten.[8][5]
- Ons lichaam heeft antioxidanten (zoals vitamine C, E en diverse enzymen) om deze vrije radicalen te neutraliseren, maar bij een te sterk verhoogde zuurstofbelasting kan dit systeem “doordraaien” en de schade overheersen.[2][5]

### 3. Medische risico’s van te veel zuurstof

- Bij hoge partiële druk zuurstof (denk aan duiken of zuurstoftherapie) kan sprake zijn van zuurstofvergiftiging (hyperoxie), met irritatie van longen, longoedeem, en bij extreme drukken ook klachten aan hersenen en ogen (zoals epileptische aanvallen of beschadiging aan het netvlies).[3][6][9]
- Bij zeer jonge, te vroeg geboren baby’s kan een te hoog zuurstofgehalte in de couveuse leiden tot permanent oogbeschadiging (zo‑genoemde retinopathia of retinopathia of prematurity).[6]

Kort gezegd: zuurstof is essentieel, maar bij een sterke toename (in de lucht of in de lichaamspartiele druk) neemt zowel de brandbaarheid als de oxidatieve schade in het lichaam toe, met al die risico’s voor gezondheid en materiaal.[5][6][1]
