It’s usually said that the Persian language hasn’t been changed very much for the past 1000 years; that’s true, for example the lyric of the above song👆 dates back to almost 800 years ago, nevertheless there are only a few words that an average native speaker of Persian wouldn’t know the meaning and the majority of these words are actually used in everyday speech.

In order to appreciate the lyric/poem even more, one needs to have some extra-linguistic knowledge as well; for example the Biblical/Qur’anic stories of Pharaoh – Moses and Jacob – Joseph.
Poem by: Rumi (1207 – 1273 AD) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumi)

Singer: Shahram Nazeri

Translation by: A.J. Arberry

النِّكَاحُ سُنَّتِي فَمَنْ رَغِبَ عَنْ سُنَّتِي فَلَیسَ مِنِّي
📝 An Arabic Hadith from Prophet Muhammad which means “Marriage is my Sunnah (tradition) and whoever refrains from my tradition is not from me (my nation)”
This Hadith is usually quoted by the marriage officiant (usually a clergyman) at the wedding ceremony before the marriage vows

dūshize دوشیزه unmarried woman or girl آنسة

fāl فال omen

neek نیک = خوب good جید

📝 mehrie مهریه Mahr (in Islamic tradition, a mandatory amount of money or valuable possessions a groom is required to give to the bride. In Iran the Mahr usually ranges from a few to a few thousand Bahar Azadi gold Coins)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahr

📝(the word that is widely used and understood is “mehrie” though)

sekke سکه coin عملة معدنية

tavāfogh kardan توافق کردن to agree on/upon

kalāmo allah کلام الله (Arabic: the word of god. It refers to the Qur’an)

aroos rafte gol bechine عروس رفته گل بچینه (lit, the bride has gone to pick flowers)
📝 According to Iranian wedding customs, the bride is not supposed to say “yes” the first and second time the marriage officiant asks her for her consent to the marriage. That’s why someone else comes with excuses such as “the bride has gone to pick flowers!” or “the bride has gone to bring rosewater!”. One philosophy behind this is that the bride shouldn't show so much excitement about getting married!, she should be demure!. In the above clip👆 however the bride is not Iranian and not familiar with the Iranian customs; that explains her surprise and the giggling of some guests to what she said.
