In Iranian culture taarof (تعارف) is a complex set of behaviors that has many forms and guises. The general idea behind this social etiquette is to be very nice, kind and polite usually towards people “with whom we have taarof” (باهاشون تعارف داریم) offering or refusing something without actually meaning it. Often, the closer two people get in a relationship, the less taarof appears in their behavior towards one another.

Foreigners or tourists who come to Iran and are not familiar with this Iranian custom may take at a face value the invitation of someone to their home or the refusal to accept money by a taxi driver or a shopkeeper which may result in an awkward situation. Understanding when the offer or refusal is sincere and when it is “taarof” is not always easy; some may go out of their way in insisting!

One common related idiom to learn is تعارف اومد نیومد داره (taarof oomad nayoomad dAre) which is an idiom to warn you to be careful with using taarof because it is possible that others misconstrue it and you end up not having what you actually wanted or forced to do something you didn’t want to do!

When the fetters of slavery wrapped around a nation's feet
Throwing off the yoke of tyranny and oppression is up to you and your fist.
Let's make an uprising and get free from the bond of slavery
Rising up and sacrificing our lives to uproot the enemy.

I've taken root in this soil
In love with it, pure or spoiled.

Here I breathe as long as I live
What do I want? I have no hint.

No trace of light in this gloomy somberness,
I run however in this thirsty wilderness.

One day from this soil, I will grow flowers,
With my empty hands that have no powers.

And the song of victory I will sing
Just like the sun in the spring.

- Fereydoon Moshiri
