ما خرجنا نعيش في الدنيا كما تعيش البهائم نأكل ونشرب وننام فقط
We did not come into this dunyā just so we can live as cattle do; merely to eat, drink and sleep.
ولكن خرجنا لنعد الزاد لآخرة
Rather, we're here in order to prepare provisions for our ākhirah.
كما قال الله تعالى: (وما خلقت الجن والإنس إلا ليعبدون)
Just as Allāh the Exalted said: {And I (Allāh) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).} [51:56]
وقال تعالى: (أفحسبتم أنما خلقناكم عبثاً وأنكم إلينا لا ترجعون فتعال الله الملك الحق)
And He said: {“Did you think that We had created you in play (without any purpose), and that you would not be brought back to Us?” So Exalted be Allāh, the True King} [23:115-116]

Ash-Sha’bī رحمه الله said:
“The hour will not be established until knowledge is perceived as ignorance and ignorance is perceived as knowledge!”
Ibn Rajab رحمه الله comments on this statement by saying:
“And all this is from distortion of realities and the backwardness of affairs that will occur at the end of time!”
[Jāmi’ Al-Ulūm: 144]
- The reality is we are living in these deceptive times. This speech of Ash-Sha’bī is based on the hadīth of the Messenger ﷺ when he said:
إن بين يدي الساعة سنين خوادعة يصدق فيها الكاذب ويكذب فيها الصادق ويؤتمن فيها الخائن ويتكلم فيها الرويبضة قالوا: يارسول الله وما الرويبضة قال الفويسق يتكلم في أمر العامة
“Indeed, near to the hour are deceptive years: the liar is considered truthful, the truthful a liar and the treacherous entrusted, and al-ruwaybiḍah will speak. They said, O Messenger of Allah, and what is al-ruwaybiḍah? He said: The base wicked-doer speaking in relation to general affairs.”
A person will devote himself to Islamic knowledge and will be considered an ignoramus. Yet the one who fully devotes himself to academic studies - whilst being ignorant of his religion - is considered intelligent?
{ يَعْلَمُونَ ظَاهِرًا مِنَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ عَنِ الْآخِرَةِ هُمْ غَافِلُونَ }

Question: We request that you explain to us practical steps to cure the hardness of the heart we are capable of.
Sheikh: Allah has said, “So fear Allah as much as you are able.” When a person desires to do something, they are able to do so. In the hadith of Maimun ibn Abi Shabib from by Mu'adh ibn Jabal, reported by al-Tirmidhi, Mu'adh asked the Prophet ﷺ, “Tell me of an act which will admit me to Paradise and distance me from Hellfire.” The Prophet replied, “You have asked about a great matter, yet it is easy for those whom Allah makes it easy.” Although this hadith has a weak chain of narration, its meaning is supported by Allah’s words: “And those who strive for Us, We will surely guide them to Our ways.”
Whoever is sincere in their strives, Allah makes it easy for them to achieve what they seek in good deeds. Allah does not burden us beyond our capabilities and strengths. If there is something in the Shariah prescribed for a particular matter, then know that it is within your capacity and ability, but you need to strive earnestly to be able to do it.
What I will mention to you now is within your capability, but it requires sincere striving.
🔻One of the greatest means to soften a hardened heart is the constant remembrance of Allah. Allah has said, “Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest,” and the tranquility of the heart removes its hardness. Al-Makhul (may Allah have mercy on him) said, “The remembrance of Allah is a cure, and the remembrance of people is a disease.” Abdullah ibn Awn said, “The remembrance of Allah is a remedy, and the remembrance of people is a disease.”
When a person persists in the remembrance of Allah, their heart becomes soft. The most important remembrance to maintain is that which Allah has obligated and emphasized: the five daily prayers. Beyond that, there are other recommended remembrances throughout the day and night, such as morning and evening adhkaar, and adhkaar before sleeping and upon waking, and when eating and drinking. Whoever maintains these prescribed remembrances throughout the day and night will be among those who remember Allah often, as explained by Abu Amr ibn al-Salah and agreed by Ibn al-Qayyim. Constant engrossment in the remembrance of Allah removes the hardness of the heart.
🔻Another means is to focus the soul on what benefits it, for one of the causes of hardness of the heart is occupying oneself with what does not benefit. If you focus yourself on what benefits you, it will soften your heart. In Sahih Muslim, it is reported from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Be keen on what benefits you, seek the help of Allah, and do not feel helpless.”
When a person strives for what benefits them, it occupies them from what does not benefit, gathers their heart on what is beneficial, and softens it. Being idle weakens the strength of the heart, diminishes its energy, and brings upon it ailments and diseases. One should not take idleness lightly, even if it is brief, as Ibn Hazm (may Allah have mercy on him) said, “An hour of idleness corrupts a year of discipline.” If a person spends an entire year disciplining themselves on a matter, then occupies themselves with the ways of people of idleness for even an hour, it can ruin the discipline of the year from knowledge or work.

🔻Another cause of heart softness is looking at those above you in religion and those below you in worldly matters. One of the main causes of hardness of the heart is a person's admiration of their own religious status and contempt of their worldly status. Everyone loves to have a high status. If you see a person praising themselves for their religious achievements, feeling secure in their deeds, and seeking more from the world than they have, know that this is one of the causes of their heart's illness and hardness.
From the causes that will soften your heart, is following what the Prophet ﷺ instructed in the authentic hadith: looking at those above you in religion and those below you in worldly matters, for this is more likely to prevent you from belittling Allah's blessings upon you. When you aim to reach the religious status of those above you, it softens your heart because you are occupied with a significant and beneficial matter, while looking at those below you in worldly matters, removes the corruption of preoccupation with the debris of the world and its adornments, and thus softens your heart.
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) has beneficial words in "Ighathat ul-Lahfan" and "Al-Jawab al-Kafi," and his discussion in "Ighathah" is more detailed regarding the corruptors of the heart. He mentioned five corruptors of the heart, such as excessive socializing and talking among others, and explained what a person should be like in protecting their heart.
Unfortunately, most of those engaged in seeking knowledge do not address these issues except rarely, and they do not preoccupy themselves with the means of softening hearts, rectifying souls, and refining morals. This results in their souls being corrupted and their hearts becoming hard. Knowledge is praised only if it it results in a soft and tender heart that draws closer to Allah.
Therefore, a seeker of knowledge should not disdain reading books on heart-softeners, zuhd, and biographies, as they contain great benefit for the heart. What is intended from knowledge is what benefits, not for what elevates one's status, as Abu Amr al-Maqdisi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “People say knowledge is what is in the heart, but I say knowledge is what accompanies you to the grave,” meaning what benefits you.
A person should strive for what benefits them, including heart-softening works, moral refinement, elimination of psychological ailments, and revealing the states mentioned by scholars in their writings. One should focus on the works of the scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah, especially the books on zuhd by the great scholars such as Ahmad ibn Hanbal, his student Abu Dawood, Ahmad's teacher Waki' ibn al-Jarrah, “Az-Zuhd” by Hanad ibn al-Sari, “Az-Zuhd” by Asad ibn Musa, and other books on zuhd.
This concludes the answer to the question, by Allah is all success. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon His Prophet and Messenger Muhammad ﷺ and his family and companions.

Tips to start off this year for your spiritual hijrah
As we enter in the sacred month of Muharram, we are reminded of a significant milestone in the history of Islam - The Great Hijrah (Migration). We recall the long and difficult journey from Mecca to Medina taken by the Prophet (peace & blessing be upon him) and his companions after being subjected to years of persecution, oppression and hostility.
Marking the beginning of a new Islamic year, the hijrah serves as a great reminder to us all. It reminds us of a new chapter in the lives of the early Muslims and the sacrifices they made to become the exemplary Muslims of all time.
Now that we have entered the new year, what spiritual hijrah will you be making?
Here are some tips to start off this year for your spiritual hijrah:
1. Start sacrificing some sleep and plan to wake up every night for Tahajjud (Night Prayers) and Insha'ALLAH you’ll feel the great difference in your life.
2. Set a specific amount of the holy Qur'an you want to read, memorize and understand every day, and ensure that a day doesn’t pass until you’ve done it.
3. Make a promise to yourself to quit any haram and bad habits such as listening to music/song (haram) and watching movies/tv shows (major sins), smoking, gossip, lying, backbiting, wasting time (social media)…..
4. Start following the sunnah more and if you are lacking in the obligatory acts of worship, this is the time to start. For sisters who haven’t worn the niqab yet, place your intentions and start from now. Lacking in lowering the gaze, this is your time. Start practicing modesty not only in the way you look, but in your character, manners and behaviors as well.
5. Forgive and practice more patience with others. Avoid getting angry or impatient and try your best to let go of the trivial issues and pardon those who have fallen into mistakes.
6. Devote more time with your parents, be patient with them and let go of any differences to avoid falling into disagreements and always try to make them happy in the boundary of Shariah.
7. Keep away from that which is unhealthy to your mind and body. Whether it’s unhealthy food, laziness, and unhealthy environment, toxic friends; bad company…… make a change to better your physical and mental health from staying away from that which will harm you in akhirat and in your connection to ALLAH rabbul izzat.
8. Set a goal which you want to achieve for the Sake of ALLAH this year and work for it. just set a consistent goal which will bring about any positive changes.
9. Always make an intention for your every deed, action and speech you say or do, Whether it’s eating, sleeping, cooking, learning something new…. Connect it all back ALLAH. Placing an intention in what you do for the sake of ALLAH will reap you great rewards.
10. If you haven’t already, make sure a day doesn’t pass except that you recite the morning and evening adhkar (remembrance of Alla5ah) with a present heart. The Adhkar is an important part of every Muslim life which serves as protection from all evil, blessings in your life, well being in this life and next and contentment and peace in your heart by the will of ALLAH. Always include much Dhikr in your daily life and watch the blessings of ALLAH shower upon you.
May ALLAH guide us all to which pleases Him and make us all from His beloved, ameen

FASTING A DAY BEFORE OR AFTER ‘AASHURA
1) Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that when Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was informed that the Jews and Christians revere and honour the tenth of Muharram (‘Aashura) he said:
‘Next year, we will fast on the ninth as well if Allah wills’
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2661)
2) Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
‘If I am alive next year, I will fast on the ninth as well’
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2662)
3) Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
‘Fast on the day of ‘Aashura (tenth of Muharram) and oppose the Jews. Fast one day before it or one day after it’
(Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, Hadith: 2095, Musnad Ahmad, vol. 1 pg. 241, Sharhu Ma’anil Athar of Imam Tahawi, vol. 2 pg. 78 and As Sunanul Kubra of Imam Bayhaqi, vol. 4 pg. 287)
In light of the above, it is virtuous to fast on the ninth and tenth or the tenth and eleventh of Muharram. In fact Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) states:
Fasting on the ninth, tenth and eleventh of Muharram is on the highest level of preference.
(Fathul Bari, under Hadith: 2000)
