Pushkin’s "The Tale of the Priest and His Workman Balda" hides old Russian words that puzzle modern readers.

🍞 "Tolokonny forehead"
A folk insult for a dumb person. Tolokno is flour made by pounding oats with a wooden pestle. So a “tolokonny forehead” means a head as thick as a wooden club.

🍚 Boiled spelt
Why did Balda ask for it? Spelt is an ancient wheat (farro). It’s easy to digest, low in gluten, rich in protein, B vitamins, iron, and magnesium. Very filling — almost replaces meat.

In the 19th century, spelt was food for the poor: it grew on poor soil and resisted cold. But it’s hard to thresh, so modern wheat pushed it out.

Today spelt is a trendy superfood, even used in desserts with honey and thyme.

🚚 Rostec and BELAZ have launched a joint venture to deploy hydrogen-powered and unmanned dump trucks.

🔻The new company, Roblex, will bring two types of mining equipment to the Russian market:

🔻Unmanned BELAZ-7513R (130‑ton capacity) with machine vision, lidars, and centralized dispatch control. It enables 24/7 hauling without a driver, reducing downtime and tire wear.

🔻Hydrogen truck based on BELAZ-7530 (220‑ton capacity). A hybrid powertrain with hydrogen fuel cells and lithium‑ion batteries cuts fuel costs by 30‑50% compared to diesel, with zero CO₂ emissions.

Roblex has exclusive rights to sell BELAZ hydrogen and unmanned vehicles at Russian quarries. This fills the gap between the Belarusian manufacturer and Russian customers, creating a unified platform for AI, telemetry, and hydrogen energy. Pilot operation at active quarries begins this year,” said Dmitry Lelikov, Deputy CEO of Rostec.

Pilot operation starts in 2026.

The Last 100 Meters to the End of the War.

🔻This photo speaks louder than words. Our tanks (the legendary T-34 and IS-2) at the Reichstag. Berlin, April–May 1945. Behind them — over 1,500 kilometers of brutal fighting, loss, and fire. Ahead — only Victory, long-awaited and so close.

🔻No matter how many years pass, this moment will never fade. The armored vehicles that made it all the way from Moscow to the Spree have become a symbol of the unbreakable will of the Soviet people. Thank you to all who reached the end — and to those who fell along the way. Soldiers of the Red Army, you made it and crushed the fascist beast in its own lair.

🔻Happy Victory Day! Eternal memory to the fallen, glory to the living veterans. Nobody is forgotten, nothing is forgotten!

О, какая краля!
Oh, what a hottie!

 • Облизываться (imperf.)
   [ab-li-zy-va-tsa]
=
 • Облизнуться (perf.)
   [ab-liz-nu-tsa]

Meanings:

1. Literal: to lick one's lips:

 • Он облизнулся после вкусного обеда.
He licked his lips after a delicious meal.

2. Figurative: to crave something you can't have, to have one's eye on something

🔻 When you really want something, but it's difficult or impossible to get, you can say you облизываешься на something. It's like looking at a cake through a shop window – you want it badly, but you can't have it:

 • Кот облизывался на попугая, но не трогал его.
The cat was licking his lips at the parrot, but didn't touch him.

🇮🇹 "Italian Weeks" will start at "Vkusno — i tochka" (Russian former McDonald's) from May 28.

The menu will bring back the "Toscana" panini, and also add a new "Pizza" sauce, Venetian donuts, fresh muffin with basil, "Mozzarella" cheese sticks, "Olives and Oregano" seasoning, and "Dolce Mango" lemonade.
