The most unusual books in Russia.

🔸The first edition of the novel “Eugenе Onegin” by Alexander Pushkin, published as a separate book. This happened in Smirdin’s printing house on March 20, 1833.

🔸Soviet erotic alphabet of 1931, drawings for which were created by the monumental sculptor Sergei Merkurov, the author of numerous monuments to Ioseph Stalin and Vladimir Lenin.

🔸 One of the record holders, once listed in the Guinness Book of Records, is a miniature edition, less than 1 mm in size. It was "The Chameleon", a short story by Anton Chekhov.
The creator is considered to be Omsk artist Anatoly Kononenko.The publishing house released 50 copies in Russian and the same number in English. Each book contains a portrait of Chekhov, 15 sheets and 2 color illustrations.

🔻These ancient towns were heavily formative to the centrality of the Russian Orthodox Church in society.

🔻They preserve the memory of key events in medieval and Imperial Russian history. The towns have been called "open-air museums" and feature unique monuments of Russian architecture of the 12th–18th centuries, including kremlins, monasteries, cathedrals, and churches.

🔻This phraseological unit was derived from the old Russian adverb 'куды' (куда)-> where to?

Origin:
There was a prejudice that if you asked a person where he was going, then he would not have luck along the way. So, in response to this question where a man was going, people usually said: 'на Кудыкину гору' (to Kudykina Mountain).

🔻The expression itself is a negatively coloured response - “It’s none of your business,” or a reluctance to answer at all.

🔻In the extended version, the answer is:

• На Кудыкину гору воровать помидору!
[ na ku'dykinoo 'goroo vara'vat' pami'doroo ]
🇬🇧 To steal tomatoes on the Kudykinа mountain.

🔻There is a theme park 'Kудыкина Гора' in Lipetsk Region.

🔢 Сергиев Посад

🔻Sergiyev Posad is the religious center of the Moscow Region as its first monastery was founded in 1337.

🔻The monastery began as a church built by Sergius of Radonezh, made out of wood, and by 1345 was recognized as a place of religious worship.

🔻In the 18th century, wooden monasteries were mostly destroyed and began reconstruction and settlement (roads, hotels, stable, and hospice).

🔻Lavra was closed in 1919 after the Russian Revolution, like all other places of worship in the USSR.

🔻The town's name, alluding to St. Sergius, has strong religious connotations. Soviet authorities changed it first to just Sergiyev in 1919, and then to Zagorsk in 1930, in memory of the revolutionary Vladimir Zagorsky.

🔻It was reopened later in 1941 during WW2 and continued to serve as a religious and historical center of Russia.

⏺Олень (masculine)

Meaning:
1) traditional: a (rein)deer
2) but on the Internet and in real life you can often hear someone calls a narrow-minded or careless person 'олень'.

🔻Those who commit rash acts, do something without thinking about the consequences are called:

• олени [ a'lenee] (plural)

• Вот олени!
   [ vot a'lenee ]
🇬🇧 literally: Here are deer! They are assholes/weirdos!

• Ну ты и олeнь!
  [ noo ty i a'len' ]
🇬🇧 You're too naive/careless/ narrow-minded!

🔻In the context of Internet memes, 'олень' has become a kind of symbol of clumsiness,  awkwardness and of course, naivety, as the jokes about antlers and disloyal girlfriends take the first place!🦌

⚠️ It's impolite to call someone 'олень', and should be used carefully, or not used at all. But you can hear it in Russia, so, you must know it in case someone insults you.
