🥳Today, June 23rd, is:

🇷🇺Международный День Балалайки
International Balalaika Day

🔻The balalaika is a three-stringed plucked musical instrument that is a symbol of Russian culture. It has a rich history and was often used at folk festivals and celebrations.

🔻The first mention of the balalaika dates back to June 23, 1688, when a relevant entry was made in the document Память из Стрелецкого приказа в малороссийский приказ (Memory from the Streltsy Order to the Little Russian Order), according to the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music.

🔻The word балалайка [ba-la-lay-ka] is believed to derive from the words балабонить and балагурить, meaning to chat idly or to engage in idle talk.

🔻The video by™️sergeyvorontsovbalalaika features Яблочко - a playful song popular among revolutionary soldiers during the Russian Civil War, and the sailor's dance performed to its melody.

❓️How do you like this Russian folk musical instrument?

On June 24, 1945, the Victory Parade took place on Red Square, Moscow.

🔻The parade commenced at 10:00 AM with Marshal Georgy Zhukov's entrance on a white horse. Marshal Konstantin Rokossovsky commanded the parade, and they both inspected the troops.

🔻Finding a white horse which was supposed to symbolize the Victory, for Marshal Zhukov was no easy task, but one was found in the NKVD troops. Its name was Кумир (Idol).

🔻The preparations for the parade lasted a month. During this time, Zhukov got used to the horse, and the horse was trained not to be afraid of loud noises. To achieve this, an orchestra was present at the riding practices.

🔻The parade featured combined regiments from ten fronts, the Navy, military academies, and the Moscow garrison, including war heroes and distinguished soldiers.

🔻Key moments included the carrying of 36 battle flags of distinguished units and the symbolic disposal of 200 captured Nazi banners at the foot of Lenin's Mausoleum.

🔻Later, at a reception in the Kremlin, Stalin gave a toast, saying:

Our government has made not a few mistakes... Another nation might have said to the government: You have not justified our expectations, go away... But the Russian people did not do that...Thank you, the Soviet people, for the trust...

The Griboyedov Canal is one of the oldest in Saint Petersburg!

🔻Originally, the canal was called the Catherine Canal, after Empress Catherine II, during whose reign it was constructed.

🔻In 1923, the canal was renamed Griboyedov Canal, after the writer Alexander Griboyedov, and later simply the Griboyedov Canal.

🔻The renaming was part of a general Soviet-era policy aimed at replacing names associated with the Tsarist family with those of figures from Russian culture.

🔻Alexander Sergeyevich Griboyedov did indeed live in one of the houses along the canal's embankment, which likely served as the main reason for choosing his name for the renaming.

You Don't Mess Around With Comrade Stalin

🔻During the GPW, the troops under the command of Bagramyan were the first to reach the Baltic Sea. To present this event with more pomp, the general personally filled a bottle with water from the Baltic Sea and ordered his aide to fly to Moscow with this bottle.

🔻However, while he was flying, the Germans counterattacked and pushed Bagramyan away from the Baltic coast. By the time the aide arrived in Moscow, they had already been aware of this.
And so, the proud aide entered Stalin's office and grandly proclaimed:

"Comrade Stalin, General Bagramyan sends you water from the Baltic!"

🔻Stalin took the bottle, turned it over in his hands for a few seconds, then gave it back to the aide and said:

"Give it back to Bagramyan, tell him to pour it back where he took it from."

🔻General Baghramyan carried out the order only two months later and poured the water into the same place.
