👋Приветствую, товарищи!
Немного философии с утра:)

Сегодня четверг.
Today is Thurday.

Четверг это маленькая пятница.
Thursday is a little Friday.

Это хуже, чем суббота, но гораздо лучше, чем понедельник.
It's worse than Saturday but way better than Monday.

Но немного хуже, чем пятница.
But it's a bit worse than Friday.

Зато четверг всё же лучше, чем среда.
On the bright side, Thursday is still better than Wednesday.

Четверг даже лучше, чем воскресенье, потому что в воскресенье завтра понедельник, а в четверг завтра пятница.
Thursday is even better than Sunday because on Sunday it's almost Monday, but on Thursday it's almost Friday.

🎧🗣👇 Listen and practice!

Очень люблю or Много люблю?

🔻The adverbs много [mno-ga] and oчень [o-chin'] can be translated as а lot / very much. Но есть нюанс!

🔢 Много goes with things you can measure or count:

много работать (to work a lot)
много есть (to eat a lot)

🔢 Очень is usually used for emotions and states - things you can’t count:

очень люблю (I love someone/something a lot)
очень хочу (I do want something)

✅️ОЧЕНЬ люблю
✅️ОЧЕНЬ хочу
❌️МНОГО люблю

💢 BTW it is possible to use много хочу (I want a lot of...). When I was a child I often heard a proverb:

Много хочешь - мало получишь!
SLT: Want much - get little!
Grasp all, lose all.

😉But that's not a healthy mindset, just so you know.

⚠️Legend says that the translation of this sentence has caused a lot of physical pain to many Russian students! Beware!

За песчаной косой лопоухий косой пал под острой косой косой бабы с косой.
Behind the sandy spit, a hare with floppy ears died under the sharp scythe of a cross-eyed woman with a braid.

За песчаной косой: Behind the sandy spit (Коса in this case refers to a sandy landform, за косой - Instrumental case).

лопоухий косой: a hare with floppy ears (Косой here means "hare")

пал под острой косой: died under the sharp scythe (Коса here means a tool, под косой - Instrumental case)

косой бабы с косой: a cross-eyed woman with a braid (Косая баба means cross-eyed woman: с косой (Instrumental case) with a scythe .

😎По просьбе трудящихся ещё один пример:

Запрет на ругань матом Таню не пугал, она умела смотреть матом.
The ban on swearing didn't scare Tanya; she could swear at someone without uttering a single profanity.
🗝
In Russian, смотреть матом means to look at someone with intense anger, resentment. The look is so strong it's as if you are cursing someone with your eyes.

Пение соловья лечит депрессию, снимает головную боль, активизирует работу всех органов и систем. Слушаем и заряжаемся здоровьем!
Nightingale song heals depression, relieves headaches, and activates the function of all organs and systems. Listen and recharge your health!

🔻You might hear a Russian idiom:

Заливаться соловьём (imperf., reflexive, 1st conjugation)
Literally: to pour oneself out like a nightingale
Figuratively: to speak eloquently, passionately, and with great enthusiasm about something.

🔻It implies that the person is speaking beautifully and persuasively, perhaps even exaggerating or embellishing the truth.

Ухажёр 🆚️ Ухожор

🔻These Russian nouns sound almost identical! What's the trick?

🔢 Ухажёр (masc.noun)
[u-kha-zhor]
A suitor; a boyfriend; someone who courts a woman

🔻This real colloquial noun comes from the verb:
Ухаживать (за) (imperf., 1st conjugation)
[u-kha-zhy-vat' za]
To take care of, to make approaches to a girl/woman

🔢 Ухожор (masc.noun)
[u-kha-zhor]
SLT: an ear-eater, the one who devours an ear

🔻This is a made-up, humorous word used as a joke:

Ух(о) (an ear) + linking 'o' + жор (gluttony or a period of intense eatin)

😉Be careful not to mix them up unless you intend to be funny!

🥳Today we celebrate:

День Рыжих
Redhead Day

🔻Throughout history, there have been many stereotypes about redheads. They were sometimes considered soulless and willing to steal others' souls, and at other times, believed to have magical abilities.

• Я что, рыжий, что ли?
[ya shto ry-zgyj shto li]
SLT: Am I a redhead or something?

🔻This is a peculiar expression used to indicate that someone doesn't want to stand out from the crowd. The meaning of this phrase is similar to the idiom:

Белая ворона (femin.noun)
[be-la-ya va-ro-na]
SLT: А white crow
An odd, unusual person

🔻By the way, ginger cats are the cheekiest of felines! This idea has even led to another colloquial Russian expression (no hints at my earlier post!):

• Получить по рыжей наглой морде (perf.)
[pa-lu-chit' pa ry-zhey nag-lay mor-de]
To get a smack on the ginger, cheeky face

▶️I'd also like to share a funny Soviet cartoon for kids Рыжий, рыжий, конопатый! (1971): https://youtu.be/kjenNopQ2P8?feature=shared
