The St. George Ribbon👍symbolizes the heroism of Soviet soldiers and serves as a reminder of the great victory over fascism.

🔻The history of this Victory symbol begins in 1769. During the Russo-Turkish War, Empress Catherine II established the Order of St. George, an award for army officers bestowed for personal bravery displayed on the battlefield.

🔻According to the order's 1769 statute, the insignia was attached to a silk ribbon with three black and two orange stripes. The ribbon bore the motto "For Service and Bravery." Black allegorically represented gunpowder smoke, while orange symbolized the fire of battle. Furthermore, the St. George Ribbon reproduced the colours of the state emblem of the Russian Empire, which depicted a black double-headed eagle on a gold background.

🔻By a decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR "On the equalization of rights of all servicemen" on December 16, 1917, the St. George ribbons were abolished.

🔻However, during the Great Patriotic War, on May 21, 1942, a Guards insignia was established, awarded to military units that distinguished themselves in battle, and the flags of Guards units featured a ribbon with the historical colours of the St. George Ribbon.

🔻These same colours were used in the design of the Order of Glory and the medal "For Victory over Germany," whose ribbons are edged with the St. George Ribbon.

💙Dolphins near the coast of Balaklava, Crimea

🇷🇺В этом видео всё прекрасно: изумительная палитра моря, сливающегося с небом, тёмные силуэты скользящих в воде плавников, угрюмые скалы. Так хочется быть частью этого мира! А вам нравится?
🇬🇧Everything in this video is perfect: the amazing palette of the sea merging with the sky, the dark silhouettes of fins gliding through the water, the somber cliffs. I so want to be a part of this world! Do you like it?

Happy May Day, dear comrades!

🔻In July 1889, the Paris Congress of the Second International, in memory of the workers' demonstration (1886), decided to hold annual May Day demonstrations.

🔻During the Soviet era, May 1st was widely celebrated with parades and performances by workers and creative teams.

🔻I myself remember the mandatory participation of schoolchildren in these parades. We made huge white or red flowers🌷out of crepe paper with our own hands and waved them during the parade. It was fun, by the way.

🔻Now, the May Day celebrations are simpler; it's more of an opportunity to spend the day with loved ones and family.

🔻May Day is often associated with шашлыки [shash-ly-ki] barbecues, as warm weather arrives during this holiday period, and Russians enjoy spending time with family and friends in the forest or at their dachas.

Do you celebrate May Day in your country?

Did you know that in the USSR there used to be a female newly-invented name 'Даздраперма'?

Даздраперма
  [da-zdra-per-ma]

🔻It came from a Soviet slogan:
ДА ЗДРАвствует ПЕРвое МАя!
Long life the first of May!

Not long ago I learned that the Russian name Svetlana, which means light, bright, shining, radiating light or light-bearing, enlightened, with spiritual light, in Soviet times was used as an abbreviation for the phrase "SVETovaya LAmpa NAkalivania (an incandescent light bulb).

This is related to the work of the plant of the same name, which produced electric light bulbs. In the 1920s, such usage was widespread and was used on par with "Ilyich's light bulb."
