A ride with a view: The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin Funicular

🔻This funicular railway connects the upper and lower towns of Nizhny Novgorod, offering breathtaking views of the Volga River, the historic Kremlin, and the surrounding cityscape.

🔻Built in 1896 by the “Finnish Light Steamship Company” of the Petersburg entrepreneur R. K. von Hartmann, the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin Funicular was originally built in preparation for the All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition of that year.  The original funicular operated until the 1920s.

🔻In September of this year, the beloved landmark was recreated, offering a chance to experience this historical mode of transportation once again.

🔻Price: 200 rubles for a single ride
🔻Duration:  Approximately 3 minutes one-way

The BRICS Summit is kicking off in Kazan. It will be the largest foreign policy event ever held in Russia.

• Кирпичик за кирпичиком
[kir-pi-chik za kir-pi-chi-kam]
Brick by brick

Кирпичик (кирпичики) (deminutive) <- кирпич (кирпичи)

Also:
Шаг за шагом
[shag za sha-gam]
Step by step

🔻It means to do something in a gradual and methodical way, following a sequence of actions one at a time. It implies a careful and deliberate approach, building something slowly and steadily, adding one small piece at a time.

• Губа не дура
[gu-ba ni du-ra]
SLT: the lip is not a silly girl

🔻This proverb is used to describe someone who knows how to choose the best, most advantageous option for themselves or take advantage of something valuable or useful.

🔻The full proverb is:
Губа не дура, язык не лопатка: знает, что горько, что сладко.
[gu-ba ni du-ra, yi-zhyk ni la-pat-ka, zna-yet shto go-r'-ka shto slat-ka]
SLT: Lip not a fool, tongue not a shovel, knows what's bitter, what's sweet.

🔻The proverb uses 'губа' (lip) specifically, and not another part of the body, because it is our organ that is primarily responsible for taste.

🔻This is one of the possible similar English equivalents:
Someone knows which side bread is buttered on.

Example:
• Да уж, котик, у тебя губа не дура есть икру лапками!
[da uzh, ko-tik, u ti-bya gu-ba ni du-ra yest' ik-ru lap-ka-mi]
🇬🇧 Yeah, kitty, you know which side bread is buttered on to eat caviar with your paws!

Iturup: A hidden gem in the Kuril Islands

🔻Iturup, the largest of the Kuril Islands, is a volcanic island in the North Pacific Ocean, located off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.

🔻It's a stunningly beautiful island with diverse landscapes, including snow-capped mountains, hot springs, and lush forests.

🔻Iturup has been inhabited for centuries by indigenous peoples, including the Ainu. In the 18th century, Russia took control of the island, which was contested by Japan.  In the aftermath of World War II, the island became part of the Soviet Union and remains part of Russia today.

🔻The island is a haven for wildlife, including brown bears, seals, and a variety of bird species.
Iturup is also known for its hot springs, which are believed to have healing properties.

🔻The population of Iturup is approximately 7,000 people, mostly concentrated in the town of Kurilsk.
